Actually Watched a Little DR Tonight
So, I realize this will sound like blasphemy to many of the villagers (cough, cough...Greebo) but I've never actually watched Dave Ramsey before.
I DID read the TMMO a year or two ago and found some pieces of it interesting and relevant, but there were many things that just weren't my cup of tea. I realize that is fine...you take his plan and adapt it to your life. However, I think there was more that I left out than what I adopted, so I kinda just left DR by the side of the road.
Tonight, there is nothing on tv and our next Netflix movie isn't coming until tomorrow, so I turned on the tv for a little background while I surfed the net and it is Dave Ramsey Family Finance Night, or something, on Fox Business channel. (As a rule, I don't watch Fox News or Fox Business, but I figured that tonight, I'd give him a shot.)
Not bad.
I think I found it most interesting to listen to the situations that so many of the callers were in. Just watching the choices that people make and see what it gets them in the end.
His advice was great, and I was in agreement with much of what he said.
I'm not turned into a Ramsey-ite, but I was impressed with the good advice that he was doling out, and was very inspired by the people who called in with their debt-free stories. We only carry a mortgage with regards to debt, but wow...how great would that feel to be done with that!
So, I broadened my horizons a bit tonight.

Some of the callers stories and his responses have left me with anything from laughter to tearful. The true life stories are quite amazing.

i prefer the radio show. he gives the callers more time, and is not as, uh, politically correct.
you can listen to the radio archives on hi swebsite for free. i put on while cleaning house.11% gross to retirement
10% takehome to tithe and offerings
emergency fund maintained at 3000(works for me)
credit card debt 7500
mortgage free
freedom accounts/sinking funds that ebb and flow
then live on the rest!
i am trying something new. LDS church advises savings or debt repayment should be the same as the tithe. 10% each.

We don't get the tv show and the books weren't my cup of tea but I really like the radio show. I agree I never know whether I'll want to slap the caller or hug them.

I thought TMMO was very good, and agreed with most of it. Hubby does not agree with many of the things DR says, but oddly enough he seems to be the one who thinks about DR when he's on the verge of spending. You wouldn't believe how many times he's said "doggone that Dave Ramsey...I was going to buy (fill in the blank) and then I started remembering the things he said"...lol So I guess it had more of an impact on him than he realized. I have watched the TV show a couple of times...I thought the callers' situations were interesting, and DR's advice was sound, but sometimes he comes off as a bit condescending and that's a trait I find very annoying no matter who it's coming from.

Hearing the situations of the callers and his advice is mostly why I listen to his podcasts. We didn't use his method to get out of cc debt, because we found him after the fact. His show did convince me to sell my new car and get a used one paid for in cash. I think his baby steps are a smart way to approach a big problem (debt). I also find his show motivates me to stay on track and focus as well as pay attention to my money!

If it makes you feel better, I've never watched him on TV either. In fact I never even read all of TMMO.... but I have listened to his radio show, and did use his methods for becoming debt free.
