    Default Gazelle-like intensity

are any of you doing Dave's plan with what he calls "gazelle intensity?" If so, what "gazelle" type things have you done lately?

For us, I have sold a lot of things on amazon and am planning a yard sale. We have cut eating out completely unless we have giftcards (I get them from students sometimes). I am also having a "staycation" for spring break this year even though this is the only time we will ever have two weeks off.

Hahahaha - I'm sure I'm not alone here but when I read the subject of your thread...I totally thought of Tony Little holding up the lil blubber of fat with the smiley face on it.

Gazelle Intensity actually refers to a segment of Dave's TMMO road show and also FPU where he talks about the Bible's teachings on getting out of debt. I'm not a Christian, but this is sound advice no matter what your faith:

My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor,
if you have struck hands in pledge for another, 2 if you have been trapped by what you said,
ensnared by the words of your mouth,
In other words, if you're in debt...

3 then do this, my son, to free yourself,
since you have fallen into your neighbor's hands:
    Go and humble yourself;
press your plea with your neighbor!
4 Allow no sleep to your eyes,
    no slumber to your eyelids.
5 Free yourself, like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,
like a bird from the snare of the fowler.
Then bust your *** to get out of it.

He shows a video at that point of a pair of Gazelle, fleeing a Cheetah in the plains.

Thus, you'll sometimes hear DR fans shout, "CHEEEETAAAAHHHHHH!" when we get offers for credit cards, and the like.
If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

I'm feelin' some gazelle intensity right now but it might just be the extra cup of coffee I had.

Sold my car, selling stuff on craig's list, revamped my budget, cut up cards, signed up for a free fpu lesson today, called to learn about the 403b, asked for extra hours over spring break and got them, asked to work this summer and hope to get that to, just stuff I wasn't doing before. I was sitting around whining about my situation instead of taking action.

In fact this thread reminded me I told myself I would go look for a part-time job and then used the snowstorm as an excuse not to. Sun is out, roads are clear, I'm outta here.

    Hugs to all and RUNNNNNN!!!!!!

I had been doing Dave's program with Gazelle like intensity. Thank God I was and able to get out of debt (except for the Mortgage) and amass 1 1/2 years of living expenses in the Emergency Fund, cause last March 2009 I was laid off from my job! Thankfully I've been able to pay my bills (except for the COBRA) from the Unemployment Insurance so I haven't had to dig too deep into the EF. But I'm really hoping I find a job real soon. In 1 year I've had only 4 interviews and I'm hoping that things start picking up real soon.

Stick with the program.....it really does work!

My husband and I just hit this in the last week or so. We wanted to buy our dream home and actually have raised over $5000 in the last 10 days. Sold some stocks, sold a bunch on ebay, having a yard sale next week, started cleaning out all the rooms in our house and we are selling whatever we have to to finish paying off all our debt except the car and house by the end of the year and plan on continuing until we pay off the car then attacking the mortgage. I also got a temporary job with the census. We are determined to pay off everything as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, my DH can't do OT at work because he works for the state and his schedule is too erratic for him to get a PT job.

Ok you posted that in the DR forum, so here's what DR would say:

    cc #1- $1345
    loc- $3966
    cc #2- $5000
    5 county- $2925
    Car- $14,382

Are you crazy? You've got 27,000+ in consumer debt and you want to move up in house??? AND NO EMERGENCY FUND but $1,000!

You do this and your "dream house" is going to become your "nightmare". Get out of debt, get your emergency fund in place, THEN buy your dream house.

Coming up with $5k to add MORE debt is NOT gazelle intensity in the DR world.

    Or am I misunderstanding you?

That's what has me confused, because "We wanted to buy our dream home and actually have raised over $5000 in the last 10 days." Sounds like they're saving up $5k to buy the dream house.

I read it as the dream home being the motivation for getting out of debt.

Also possible - but I'll leave my "are you crazy" there anyway, just in case.

Actually, it would be a smaller, less expensive house ($50,000 instead of $118,000) so it would be a move down. And I consider raising $5000 in 1 week pretty intense considering our income is only about $36,000/year

Sorry I seem to have accidently hijack your thread. Not my intention. I was just really proud of how well I thought we have done on getting serious about paying off our debt.

I meant to respond later - I saw in another subforum that you weren't going to be getting the house after all right now.

So I did misunderstand what you were trying to say in your post in this thread.

You're right, raising 5k in a week is awesome.
