Question Anybody done the Ramsey couselor training?

Has anyone in the Village taken the Nashville-based counselor training (the week-long one?)

I have been thinking about it for a long time, and recently was asked by my church to counsel a single mom who had come to the church for financial assistance.

In talking to the head of the benevolence committee, he mentioned maybe having the church pay 50% of the approximate $3000 fee if I would help out with esp. female financial counseling. (Everyone else on the committee is a man, and we are cognizant of the Bible's warning to 'avoid even the appearance of evil' in having married men deal with unmarried women on a 1:1 basis.)

Anyone who would like to share their experience, I'd be interested in knowing what you liked and disliked, as well as how you use the training, and did you feel it was worth it.

I haven't, but I'd like to hear it too, because I'm also thinking about it.
If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

In order to be a counselor, are there any special requirements?
Do you have to be debt free?

I do not see on the application form that you must be debt free. I know that Dave hires people in det - as long as they are 'working the program'. I'e heard several of his staffers give their 'debt free' scream on air.

I haven't but I would love to! I hope you decide to do it and make that investment in yourself and in serving others. I would really enjoy that same opportunity at my church. Let us know what you decide!

Wow, Greebo, I imagine they wouldn't be able to teach you much. Every one of your answers sounds as if it is coming straight from Dave-or at least his book. I always look to you for a sound "Dave" answer. I think you would do great. I must tell you, though if someone is willing to give me money advice they had better be well into getting debt free, not still working to scrape together their $1000 and having $70,000 in cc debt!

I appreciate the compliment. I'd like to know I had the full seal of approval, though. Once the real estate allows me to quit working full time, I have ideas about setting up low cost financial counseling centers for low-to-mid income people, and having the DR stamp would give that credibility.

That's a long term idea though.

That area of the market is very under served.

Looking forward to spiritual income? Would a CFP also be helpful for your goals?

I'm not sure what you mean by spiritual income.

CFP requires a degree - something I never finished, and I'm not looking to do high end investing advice, but fundamentals teaching, especially for lower to middle income young people.

It's discussed in RK's "Before You Quit Your Job." Pretty much, it is money that is earned while also accomplishing a worthy goal. As opposed to competitive income, earned while just out for business or cooperative income earned by partnering with other businesses.

Oh yes, I remember him mentioning that now.

However, I am pretty sure that RK did not define the concept as 'worthy goal vs. non worthy goal'.

Business income, competitive or cooperative, *IS* a worthy goal.

yeah, I like the idea too. Sounds great. How often can we see others headed for a pitfall financially and just want to scream for them to stop!

My dh and I have taught a class and are considered FPU coordinators, but that is different than a counsellor. They sent us the info on going to Tennessee to become a counsellor and it costs $2,500 if I remember right.
