    Default Bill from 10 years ago

    Ok i get this collection notice, a past due bill from 10 years ago. From verizon regarding a cell phone. For 1 i never owned a cell back then and didn't get a cell till i remarried in 04. I live here at the same addresse since 03 and just now getting this bill. So i call them the bill is $284 they want to settle for $25.00.Ok i said if can send me more info on this account and where i was living and working at the time. It might have been a house phone since i divorced in 2000 and my ex was suppose to have payed some of the bills. So i said i will send them a M/O. Oh NO they want my credit card number or my checking account number. WHAT YOU THINK IM STUPID!! I don't think so. Again i said since they were offering the $25 settlement i would send them the MO they said it would be mailed back to me. The deal was only good for credit card and checking account payment. So i told them no way.So if they don't want to accept my form of payment then they won't get it.

    Sounds like a scam. Is this supposed debt showing on your credit report?
    “When you get to the end of all the light you know

    you will be given something solid to stand on,
    or you will be taught how to fly.” - Edward Teller

    “Our Earth is degenerate in these later days;
    there are signs that the world is speedily
    coming to an end;
    bribery and corruption are common; children no
    longer obey their parents;
    every man wants to write a book and the
    end of the world is evidently approaching.”
    — From a translation of an inscription on
    an Assyrian clay tablet, circa 2800 B.C.E.

    Willing to settle for $25 but only if you act immediately and give them your credit card or banking information now? What a load of hogwash! It reeks of fraud and I think you're wise not to fall for it.

    Just a question, but I thought they only had like 5 or 7 years to collect on a bill? Not that if you owe it you shouldn't pay. But am I wrong? Does anyone know the rule?

    A lot of people in our area, including me, were getting calls similar to that from a area "bank" awhile back.. I hung up cos' I know I never had an account there. Calls were made to the police and some contacted the newspaper immediately after getting the call.. It was a scam..

    You handled it great..

    I think more people are waking up to what might be a scam..

    Someone else probably knows the law better than me, but the statute of limitations expiring just means they can't get a court judgment to force you to pay. They can still ask you to pay.

    Alot of it depends on the state. Some states have are 6-8 and even 10 years.

    If that company has contacted you once at a legit address or phone number in the time period, they can refresh the years..

    Any company that you owe can find you anytime, example ~ when buy a car, house, anything that you might get on credit or they check your credit for.. I had a company tell me that's how they found me after many years and many moves, we bought a car from a car lot and they checked our credit.. There is some tag thing the collectors see that tells them..

    PAY CASHHHH!!! Lose the paper trail.

    After looking at this so called bill i got. I noticed It was under a phone number in a total different city that i live or ever lived. In fact the city is around 300 miles away from me. I'm going to call again on Monday, write a letter of complaint. Then turn it over to the BBB as a fraud complaint.
