Red face Am I going crazy...or just becoming weird

    Am I crazy?

I am currently in FPU just finished my second class. Dave talks about how he hates debt and doesn’t even borrow money to buy property. I mentioned to my sister that now that I am finally debt free I would like to save and pay cash for a house. I don’t want a mortgage. I don’t want or need a large home and I was thinking in the $75,000 to $100,000 range of which there are several in my area. My sister said “There is no way you will be able to do that” my mother concurred with her. After hearing their opinions I got excited!!! Yes that ‘s right excited. Am I crazy?

Let me explain I got excited because in 2002 when I told my family I was sick and tired of the Kansas winters (all the ice and snow) and wanted to move south. They all laughed.

When I applied online to Texas jobs and flew down for interviews they said “You will never leave Kansas.”

When I got a job and apartment in Texas they said I would never follow thru.

On my last night in Kansas which I spent with my brother and his wife. His wife told me “I won’t believe you are actually going until you move in your apartment in Texas.”

When I moved in my apartment and started working in Texas my family told each other that I would be returning to Kansas in six months….that was eight years ago. I am still here in Texas.

When I told my family I was going to become debt free they said in a scornful tone of voice “Yeah right! “ Well, now I am debt free and they are asking me to pay off their student loans to which I reply “Yeah right!”

So am I crazy to be excited about their attitude toward my saving to put 100% cash down on a house…or am I becoming weird as Dave mentions?

You're not crazy! I love your attitude! My family is EXACTLY the same way. When I told people I was moving to Boston, they all said exactly the same thing! In fact, they have had that response for ANY new challenge in my life.

If I listened to them, I would not have accomplished anything or taken any risks... Good for you for being stronger and not believing them - the negativity just plain sucks, but we just need to use it to be stronger! It's great motivation!

I think you've every right to feel the way you do...after all, you have a LOT of previous data that says your family really doesn't have a clue who/what you are or are capable of.

    Good for you!

Definitely weird. And Dave's weird means winning or on the way there, so all's good.

There's no doubt you can do it! Come on, just take a look at your own signature. Go for it!

Sounds like the only crazy thing YOU are doing is still associating with a bunch of unsupportive losers who think very little of you.

Yeah yeah, I know, it's your family. They're still toxic sounding to me.
If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"
