Does DR plan really work?
hey all, I am a newbie and was wondering if the Dave Ramsey plan really works to help get you out of debt. I am tired of my husband and I being in debt and all that goes with it. So, I was wondering whether or not his plan really worked and how hard it was to complete. We don't have a lot of debt, but we have enough. I've seen all of your posts about his plan and seen your success stories so I'm super excited to become debt free as well. Thanks in advance for your advice!

Worked for us. We had been on a course for years and learned so much more. We are debt free and are working on the savings. This part is slow because we are older and are helping kids w/ college/nail school at the same time.
The thing I loved best was we can catch a refresher anytime we like. (free)

It does work for us so far, and we're still only on baby step 2.
Let me recap: End of May 2009 we decided to get on the program. Starting off with roughly 23300 Euro in debt.
Fast forward to today: We have under 10000 Euro debt left, all while moving from London to Germany (saved up & paid for in cash) as well as buying a car with cash (beater of course), and going from two incomes (London) to one for over a year - my wife had to learn German first, and started her first job here three weeks ago.
So, yes, it does seem to work rather well.
The principles are simple, but that doesn't mean it's easy.
Stick to it, do not deviate and create sub-plans or extra steps, and it will work. It has worked for many people.
You need to understand WHY the steps are designed as they are, and you will have better motivation to not deviate from it. So focus on that part before committing.

It works very well. And the things that make that happen are being on the same page as your spouse, living below your means to pay off debt, paying yourself first after the debt is gone (savings).
Dave's plan can be modified to meet the more detailed needs of a household so you don't have to follow it to the letter... you follow a plan that works for your family situation.
Having Greebo stumble upon DR by "accidental planning" was the best thing I could have done for our future.

The DR plan works *if* you work the plan.
In 2008, we had over $40,000 worth of consumer debt - mostly cars.
Today we are consumer debt free and have no debt but our house and our rental property. If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.
Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

It's worked well for us with some small modifications. We are currently working 4,5, & 6.
It is amazing how fast the debt can come off when you really focus on it.
