If it's worth $10,000 in trade, potentially you could get a check from the dealer. If they agree...
But it'll be worth more in a private sale.If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.
Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

My DH's busy season is spring and fall with a little overtime in the summer. I normally work 40hrs wk yr round. The first yr (a partial yr) dh was on the DR plan we were on a wing and a prayer but made it through. Then the next yr I added in a SF for the slow season. If you start a SF for next yr remember to look back and see if utilities, food, car gas or etc increase and factor that in. Then when school starts back you can leave any leftover in the sinking fund for the next yr or throw it at debt.
I would try to private party sell any auto. My dh loves to buy trucks and I have learned a lot from it. The dealership will make a profit. The last deal he tried had the dealership breaking even but they would not go for it. I think they wanted the potential for at least $2,000 profit out of the deal. So if your auto is worth 10,000 and you want a 5,000 auto + cash this dealer might give you 3,000. I don't know because DH didn't ask for cash. But you will never know if you don't ask.
Just my 2 cents.
