we have 4 cars in our family 2 paid for ( that the 23 yo and 20 yo drive )
mine that has a payment that plan is pay off early and hold onto for as long as its safe and reliable

dh will always have a payment - part of his salary is for a car that they prefer to be under 3 years old as he is out dealing with the agents and companies that bond with him - old beater would make them question how the company he works for is doing , good news it use to be leasing saabs - UGH gas guzzling - $ to fix - not anymore last 2 cars have been honda civics for good milage . first one we paid off rest of loan and gave to oldest ds when he graduated college . i would rather at least have the money from the transportation allowance go towards actually buying us something in the long run .

As far as my parents. They know I've been pretty frugal since I can remember, so it's virtually impossible to surprise them with what I did/do and they are very supportive.

My first car I paid $300 for it to get back and forth to college and about. 2nd car I paid $3500 for it.

My current car is an 07. I got it in 07 new and put a pretty big downpayment in relation to the cost. Paid the rest in under two years. Will never finance a car again.

A lot of friends finance, but they know me so they don't judge. Plus again, they know me so they know I wouldn't care if they did.
