I haven't read everyone's post but here is my opinion for what its worth. I don't have a problem with rich people or poor people or purple people or any kind of people. Something I have noticed over the years is those people that are truly rich money wise are the nicest people ever. They don't put on airs but are just people like me. Those that "pretend" to be rich but are head over heals in debt are the ones that put on airs and think they are better. I could give some prime examples in my very own neighborhood. My husband's boss is a multi-millionaire and he's one of the most down to earth guys around. He lives in a modest brick home. You would not know a multi-millionaire lived there. Then you can look at a few of those around here that drive the big cars and have the big houses and they owe out the wazzoo. I don't call that rich. I call them pretenders and I feel sad for them but not angry.

The title of this thread and most of the pompas rhetoric are extremely offensive to me .

Gee EmilyD I in no way intended to offend you or anyone else with the title....it really was tongue in cheek. I did say that we are not 'rich' but make ok money. And as far as the 'rich' people keeping insurance rates high....well I reckon this proves that we're not. We pay about $700/mo. for the 2 of us, no pre-existing conditions, generally very healthy, non smoking people and have a $5400. (1 per family per year) deductable (HSA). We are self employed, noone gives us anything. We work hard to take care of my husband's income and we give generously. It's too bad that you don't feel that life has been fair to you. I've found that for me and mine that when we view life that way, it becomes more and more true everyday.

And I wanted to add that my kids were teased as well. Mostly it was by the kids whose parents made waaaayyy less money than we did but always had the latest and greatest. I refused to let our kids define themselves by the brands they wore....

I want to comment on this but I simply cannot..

    People are poor.
    People are middle class.
    People are rich.

    The grass is green.
    The sky is blue.

Some people focus too much on other people and how they live their life, how they make their money or what kind of car they're driving this week.

Some people sit back on FV for a few hours a night, clip coupons and weed their gardens during the day in the beating hot sun.

You just do what you do because that is all you can do. Some people are loaded and snobby but I'll tell ya what - people can be living on nothing and have the worst manners in the world.

Everyday I tell my kids.. If you can't say something nice, don't even say it at all because I will sit your butt in time-out! We're not kids, focus on your life and how you live it rather than let them people with millions of coins burst your happy bubble.

Someones kid got knocked down in HS because of some kid with money.. My happy bubble was lost during my 10th grade year because I got pregnant.. it's not just wealthy people, it's people in general. We're out to get everyone! So just, ya know.. La Vita E Bella.. do what you want because you can.. everyone else does!

To hate someone or judge them based upon income, to me, is silly. It's like saying/thinking, "I hate EVERYONE that wears blue shirts." Why let the actions of the 'few' define your perception of a much larger group of people? That would be like me hating every single Baptist based off of the actions of the Westboro Baptist Church.

And I guess I am of a slightly different train of thought here than most, but I don't feel that the 'rich' are anymore obligated to help society than anyone else is. Every person in this society has a moral obligation to help others. If you have money to give, that's great, then give it, if you want. You earned it, it's yours to do with as you wish. If you don't have money to give or don't want to give your money, you can help in other ways, whether it's volunteering or whatever.

I will ask this as a general question to anyone who expressed hate/dislike and I am asking because I truly want to know: how productive is your hate? What exactly does it accomplish? Does it make you feel better about the situation you are in?

And yes, I've been in the situations that some have described here, getting made fun of for not wearing the right shoes, clothes. The kids at school and the neighbor/banker nicknamed us the Junky Joneses. It was awful hearing my mom and dad fight about money, about the house almost getting foreclosed on, about my dad's wages getting garnished, about not having heat other than a kerosene heater, no phone, etc.

But I didn't let it consume me. It takes a lot of time and energy to hate so blindly.

I think, as long as they earned it honestly...good for them!

And I don't think they should pay any more taxes (%-wise) than anyone else... They shouldn't be "punished" for earning more.
