Default How do I buy tax-free municipal savings bonds?

Over the past 10 years while invested heavily in stocks in the market (mutual funds + individual stocks) we've barely broken even. We probably would have done better had we simply invested in CDs.

Anyway, I want to buy tax-free municipal bonds but don't know how to do so. I don't want a "bond fund," only individual bonds. What is the best way to buy them? Also, once they are purchased, are we locked-in for the duration of the bonds? (I've noticed that some are 20 or more years until maturity.) Or, can we sell them before this time?

    They can help. I'm afraid I can't.

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

You can also buy US Treasuries with 0 transaction costs at treasurydirect.com (Min denomination is $1000). There are plenty of maturity lengths to choose from and they are free of some taxes, but not all.
