HSBC Savings Accounts
I am shopping around for a savings account for my emergency fund and found that HSBC is paying 3.5% from the first dollar, which is pretty good.
Does anyone here use them?

Oooh, if it's 3.5% then that's a pretty good deal. I'm sure it's subject to change, but for starting out that seems legit.

I do. For a while I had one with them and one with ING, but I finally moved the ING one over to HSBC too, because they had consistenly higher rates. Not by much, but the pennies add up.
I know many keep ING because they say the customer service is good, but I never found any difference on that score between the two. I have never had any kind of problem with HSBC.
However, I see that the 3.5% is extended only through, if I recall, September 15 or something like that. At that point it may drop. But unless they depart from what they have consistenly done, it will still be a very good and competitive rate.Last edited by dcompton; 08-05-2008 at 02:27 PM. Reason: To make it read better. I have them also and besides the good rates I like the fact that they send a cash card so I can get my money out if needed. Had to use it once and it worked great.

I have my EF in an online HSBC savings account and its good but the transfer time is slow. Takes 5 business days to transfer money around for me but I don't mind. Some people like something a little quicker.

Thanks. I went ahead and applied for a savings account. I think I have moved around so much (6-7? times in the last 5 years) that the computer couldn't verfiy who I was online, so I have to be manually approved. We'll see what happens! Thanks again!

I do! I do! I've had no problems with them at all. I use this account as mu Emergency Fund. The rate is not fixed though. When I first opened the acct it was at 5%. The lowest its been is 3.14% i think. But still, regular banks are only about 1% so its still worth it.

Cool beans! Yeah, my CU only pays something ridiculous like .25% if you are lucky, which is why I want the money out of there. They approved my application and I verified the amounts. Now just waiting for the e-mail with account info.
Thanks everyone.

I'm moving mine OUT of HSBC because for 2 weeks I have been trying to get the bank to bank transfers to work and i'm locked out, I called them and they had techs tell me it would work in 3 days that was 2 weeks ago, so I removed all my money via ATM and will be depositing it in ING where I also have an account, getting to my money is more important to me then .5% interest and I've become fed up with HSBC over the past 3 years.
