    Default Online bill payment mistake that I made!

    This is me, admitting that I made a big mistake. I'm pretty lucky in that I can fix this, but it may not be the case for others. I made a payment to a Wells Fargo account that was, in all reality, closed when I paid off the Best Buy balance earlier this year. I also have a Wells Fargo account for the MDG account. In my bill payment sleepiness, I accidentally applied an extra payment to the closed Best Buy account when it should have went to the other account!

    Doh! I feel like a complete moron right about now.

    I called the 1-800 number and talked to an account representative. They noted there was a credit on the account, but since I am not the card holder then they could not give me any further information about it. If DH calls them sometime today, they can issue a check for the credit in his name and mail it out. It would take them up to fourteen business days for us to receive the check. That'll be nice because we can put it either towards Christmas or the rest of our debts.

    I made a big mistake, admitted it to DH and said how sorry I was that I did it and he was ok with me. He wasn't mad or anything because I was upfront with him about it. I made the call and will be filling him in on it through email and later today when he comes home. Once we receive the check, it'll be deposited into his checking account and we can choose what to do with it then.

    My one piece of advice through all of this:

    Make certain that you're paying on the account that's actually open and check your bank statement often.

    Sorry the payment was made to the wrong one, but I'm glad you caught it and will be getting the money back.

    MomToTwoBoys--can you edit the payees that are available in your online bill pay queue? We have the ability to delete them, which is helpful once the account is paid off.

    Yep. I just have this nasty habit of not deleting them. I really should do that today so it doesn't happen again. I've been so busy as of late that I think I was going to do it once, but it slipped my mind. I need to get better with writing this stuff down.

    Opps! I am glad you caught your mistake and your DH will be able to fix it. I think we have all made some type of mistake one time or another because we are human. I hope you get the check soon.

    I'm confused, did you call the bank where the payment came out or just the place where you sent it? I've done this before with bills and as long as I call my bank right away they just cancel it and put the money back in my account.

    I called the place I made the payment to. It's been over two weeks and it already credited the old account. DH tried to call at 3:45 MST and they were closed. We'll try again Monday and it should be here before the third week of December (which is right before Christmas).

    Oh, okay I see now, I thought you were saying you just did it now then realized it was wrong. You noticed later, from the statement or something. It's unfortunate that you have to wait so long, but at least you can get it back.
