Budget question -- catagories needed to run a household
Besides mortgage/rent, taxes, bills (utilities, water, trash, phone, TV, internet), charity/tithe, and insurance what categories are needed to keep the house running and the people in it happy and healthy?
Here is what I have come up with so far:
Food
personal care stuff and medicine (including prescription medicine)
clothing
Children's lessons
Doctor visits (includes MD, eye doc, dentist)
Gasoline and car maintenance
necessary house repairs
home care ( like cleaning supplies -- What else would you include in this catagory?)Last edited by imagine; 01-05-2009 at 01:58 PM.

I use a category "Household consumable." Detergents, paper goods, trash bags, foil, all that sort of stuff.

Do you have pets? I have category for pet costs (i.e., vet bills, meds, food, cat litter, etc.).
I also have a travel/vacation category. I know that I travel to see my parents at Thanksgiving and Christmas every year, so I save up for that.
Savings (i.e., EF, retirement, Christmas, etc.)
Any memberships (i.e., Junior League, gym, etc.)?

We have special section for our sons pocket money in. We also budget an amount to pay for the things that he does which are normally only a couple of dollars but they do added up eg. subs for scouts .50c, entrance to the soccer grounds $3 (for parents, plauyers free), sometimes the school has special days where they need to bring a dollar or two etc. etc.
Perhaps a little miscellanous section for all those things that crop up that just dont fit anywhere or are a complete one off.Visit My Blog: http://jugglingthehome.blogspot.com/

11% gross to retirement
10% takehome to tithe and offerings
emergency fund maintained at 3000(works for me)
credit card debt 7500
mortgage free
freedom accounts/sinking funds that ebb and flow
then live on the rest!
i am trying something new. LDS church advises savings or debt repayment should be the same as the tithe. 10% each.
