Another Place To Find Free Money

My cousin called me tonight to tell me he'd found around $300 in unclaimed property from the State of Indiana. He said you just go to their web site, plug in your name and see what pops up.

The Indiana web site is:

but all states have these sites. Just Google your state name and 'unclaimed property'.

Apparently, we Americans have a tendancy to forget bank accounts and so forth when we move (or our parents forget to tell us about that hidden stash before they pass on). Heirs can collect, too. My DH found $37 that his mom left in a bank account she never told us about.

I did this and found that dh's grandmother had an insurance policy nobody knew about. So I made sure it was a government site and went ahead to claim it. That was last January. The site said to check back but nothing has changed except now Ican't get the trackingpage to come up. so now I'm not sure what to do next.

My brother did this. He filled out the papers in Dec. and got his check the other day. It was about $50, but hey, that is $50 he didn't have the day before, right?

When I worked in the bank, it was my job to send the unclaimed money to the treasurer.

I had an average of about 100 acounts every year that were sent in! I spent the year sending out letters, and most were never returned!

But remember...it's not free money at all! Its hard earned money that you earned, then left in the bank! Not free money...but forgotten money, that's for sure!
