Default Energy efficiency tax credit for 2009 (not 2008, though!)

If you install home improvements such as replacement windows, high efficiency HVAC systems, insulation, biomass stoves, new exterior doors, metal roofs, and so on, from Jan 1 to Dec 31 2009, you can claim up to $500 as a tax credit. So if you're planning (or Murphy brings you) any such work, you might get a little bit back.

I was so excited about this credit! But - items put in from Jan 1 to Dec 31 2008 are ineligible. Apparently you could claim this credit for things installed in 2005, 2006 and at least some of 2007, and you can claim it again in 2009, but for some reason 2008 got left out. Of course, this is when we installed our metal roof, new insulation, replacement windows, and heat pump.

I'm too new a poster to be allowed to post the link, but you can just google "energy efficient tax credit" and it will take you right to the info.

Thanks for the info, too bad we just replaced the furnace last year, maybe we can do some of the other things & get credit for next year.

You're welcome! We're thinking about this year too; I hope we don't have to do too much more, but if we do, I'm claiming my credit!

If I remember right if you took it in 06 or 07 you can not take it now.

The labor is not included just the materials and you need to make sure the are the correct ones before you buy.

We would dearly love to replace our windows or get a tankless water heater. We were deep in debt the last time.

BUT I doubt we will have save the money in time as the cost will be far more than the credit they give you.

We do plan on researching the replacement windows in a 1960 era home it would save in heating costs. We have single pane windows with storm windows.

Thanks for the head's up! I replaced my roof last year (of course), but was thinking about the windows this year. This might be that little incentive I need to get my butt in gear.

For $500 we could get a couple of windows done lol. We have over 50 windows that are original to the house (built in 1880). But we may be replacing an exterior door this year...at least I hope to.

be careful on windows; the 2009 regulation limits the window part of the credit to $200. To get the full $500 you need to do other improvements as well.

I didn't know about the exclusion if you took it in 2006/7, or that you could only claim the cost of materials. That's frustrating. If I can find a link with more info, I'll point everyone toward it.

I am definitely going to look into this. We were planning on replacing all of our windows with dual pane ones so I'm really going to try to get them done this year to get the credit.

This is part of the reason we put off replacing some windows in our house, too. We only have three left to go. DH wanted to do it last fall, but we'll end up doing it in the spring.
