Default How long do you keep your paycheck stubs

What general rule do you follow? Months or years or just a few recent ones? Just curious.

I'm the bookkeeper, so I can print a set any time I might need But I usually keep them for a few months.

We get paid twice a month. I keep the 4 most current.

This may be a stupid question...but here it goes. What is the importance of keeping them? I know.. say if you are buying a house, child support, or something like that, but what other reasons can you think of?

I only ask because I hate more paper in my files that need to be.

    None.

DH is paid by direct deposit. He doesn't get a pay stub. He is a salaried employee so no real variation in his pay, deductions, etc... If he ever wants to see a breakdown, he can pull it up on his computer at work.

i keep them for ten years, recently audited by the IRS and they asked for my check stubs for the past three years.
    11% gross to retirement
10% takehome to tithe and offerings
emergency fund maintained at 3000(works for me)
    credit card debt 7500
    mortgage free
freedom accounts/sinking funds that ebb and flow
    then live on the rest!

i am trying something new. LDS church advises savings or debt repayment should be the same as the tithe. 10% each.

I keep mine until I get another one!! Life's too short to hang onto a bunch of paper when the data is stored in someone else's computer!

I keep them 7 years, with our tax files. They aren't paper anymore though, they are pdfs downloaded off of the company website. My husband's supplemental health insurance premiums are tax deductible, and the pay-stubs are the only thing I have that give the amounts.

Same here..Direct deposit and salary worker. I throw them away and the only time I have kept them in the past is when a house refinance thingy a few years ago.

I was just curious if I was doing a no no. Every other friday the dh takes the stub out of his pocket and throws it some where in the bedroom and it drives me nuts. lol. I hate paper stuff!

I agree and I can always pull it up on-line. I don't keep bank statements either.

I haven't had a pay stub in 6 years!! If (for whatever reason) I need a copy I can always reprint from the puter at work. Bank statements? Same thing. Cancelled checks? Same thing, why waste my room when it's always somewhere else. In fact it makes me think of "Big Brother is Watching" when I think on it too hard - ???

I keep my check stubs for the current year, plus the previous year.

Side note. I hope everyone at least looks at their check stubs to make sure they're accurate. I work in payroll tax and I can't tell you the number of people who don't check their stubs for months and when they do, they find they are being taxed in the wrong state.

We get all of DH's paystubs online now, so we shredded all previous stubs and just keep an electronic copy of them now.
