did anyone watch suze orman last night?
There was a young man, about 28 years old, who had bankrupted twice. he had racked up again 200,000 in credit card debt. he defintiely described compulsive spending, especially shoes. his parents keep bailing him out. he was underemployed.
edit: i have a problem with serial bankruptor sociopaths anyway.
the advice she gave him was to never take money from his parents again.
no mention of underemployment, no mention of getting a J-O-B, no mention of (spenders and debtors anonymous), (debtors anonymous), or counseling. the boy didn't look "right". glassy eyed addict, no mention of enabling.
i wanted to slap her.Last edited by ladykemma2; 08-22-2009 at 06:46 AM.
11% gross to retirement
10% takehome to tithe and offerings
emergency fund maintained at 3000(works for me)
credit card debt 7500
mortgage free
freedom accounts/sinking funds that ebb and flow
then live on the rest!
i am trying something new. LDS church advises savings or debt repayment should be the same as the tithe. 10% each.

I had seen that episode before I think she should have been talking to the parents because I think it might be easier to get through to them to STOP giving their son money then it would be to get him to see what he is doing to himself and his parents. Maybe they will have an update like they had on the man who owed the IRS a ton of money.

I saw 1/2 of that interview and I had to turn it off. I agree with everything each of you said. I was trying to figure out what drug he was on besides what planet him and the parents are on. Three more, us taxpayers will have to pay for.

I didn't see her show, but she was on Oprah last night (rerun). I noticed she seems to only touch the surface. I'd prefer for her to really explain why she's giving the advise & really get involved with each situation. I'm not sure 2 or 3 sentences gets the message across. This could be the show format, but I didn't feel the people got enough information to many the decisions being discussed. Sorry, but just because Suze says so isn't good enough for me.

i saw the last part of it, the one about the kitchen remodel. I thought their little kitchen was cute. I would have kept it.

I don't have tv reception so I didn't see it, my comment is about the serial bankruptcy. I have a cousin that before they changed the laws had twice gathered up as much credit as she possible could and maxed out every card and loan she could get and walked away free and clear. She said to me, " how else am I supposed to furnish my house and buy the things my family needs"? I had no idea she had done this before and was questioning her crazy spending spree of stocking up on food, toiletries, clothing, shoes and outerwear in graduated sizes for her kids. She also was buying toys in graduated ages for Christmas and birthdays. There was enough of a stockpile for many, many years. She saw absolutely nothing wrong with it. She saw these credit card companies & banks as nameless, faceless crooks and she was going to get hers to take care of her family. The thing I could not figure out was why any credit card company would have given her so much money TWICE!?!? But then after the last bankruptcy she secured one of those adjustable loans and bought her family and very nice row home which she is really struggling to cover the mortgage of. I guess now that she HAS to pay for clothing, food, toiletries ect. she really is struggling to pay an loan that she NEVER should have gotten in the first place. Some people.

I just remembered I had another relative do the same thing! Wow what a family I've got!~~~

Strange family Polly - are you sure - just kidding!!
Didn't see this particular show. The shows I have seen with SO - she seems very flippant with her remarks. I'd personally rather listen to/ read whaat our Gabe has to offer - he makes more sense and offers detailed info.Travel light. The baggage of the past can only hold you back.

I've been reading alot of books lately. One of the books was Suze Ormans 'The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous and Broke'. I completely disagreed with 75% of her "advice".
She suggested using credit cards to "make up the shortfall between what you earn and what you need to pay your basic living costs"(pg 83). Huh? She is advising people to use credit cards to live beyond their means. If you can't afford cable, then you don't get cable! Period.
Great advice.

she is all about mainting a FICO score.l
Screw FICO. It should not be used as the basis for EVERYTHING... since it has nothing to do with your income (which, believe it or not, does have something to do with your ability to repay a loan.)

That just boggles my mind that someone would on purpose run up the credit cards with no intention of paying them back not once but twice.

I have a question here..I did NOT see the show but very very curious how somone only 28 could file bankruptcy twice in 28 adult years. You can only file every 7 or 8 years. Even 7 x 2 = 14 years minus 28 would make him 14 the first time..maybe 15. Something here is just not right. Was this question answered on the show? I find this one hard to believe.
very curious???Bank of America is THE godfather of Hell with Wells Fargo running neck and neck. When the world ends the only things that will be left are cockroaches, Walmart, Wells Fargo and Bank of America. Not necessarily in that order. The order remains to be seen.

I just had a discussion the other day with my husband about Suze Orman and other tv financial advisers.
Recently I have started taking what they say with a grain of salt. I take what I need and leave the rest. I have seen Suze's show where a woman had accumulated over almost a million dollars plus other savings (she was 56 I believe) and Suze told her that she couldn't afford to retire. All the basics were in place, her health coverage would be covered with the lady buying additional for the extras her health ins. wouldn't cover. That annoyed me. Does Suze really think that everyone should work themselves to death. Let the lady enjoy her life.
But anyway we have the basic formulas in place that Suze and Dave have suggested and have decided that we will make our own decisions on how any money we save will be invested.
We have been burned twice (2000 and 2008) with the stock market. Only the people at the top made all the money and everyone else below got crumbs or lost big.
So while I appreciate the information Suze and Dave pass on to us we have decided to take the information and fit it into our financial lives as we see fit. Whether that be the stock market, bonds or CD's we'll make that choice. Not some talking heads on tv trying to make a buck. All of us need to be more responsible in making our own financial decisions.
C@rol stepping down off the soap box now.
" May we never let the things we can’t have or don’t have or shouldn’t have spoil our enjoyment of the things we do have and can have. As we value our happiness, let us not forget it. One of the greatest lessons in life is learning to be happy without the things we cannot or should not have."
