It goes to collections after 6 months of non payment. Then it is charged off as far as the card company goes. IF you make one payment of ANY amount it starts all over again.
Chase will deal for a lesser amount after 6 months. BofA is an ass.
One company that won't deal, so to speak, is American Express. Their collection company is Collect Corp and they do work for AE.
Bank of America is THE godfather of Hell with Wells Fargo running neck and neck. When the world ends the only things that will be left are cockroaches, Walmart, Wells Fargo and Bank of America. Not necessarily in that order. The order remains to be seen.

Have you truly, really talked to you're parents about this and what they really want, besides the banks? Sorry if I missed a post about this. Hang in there.

I'm sure someone here will give you some good advice.

Let them charge it off and stick to the repayment plan you have in place.

Look if you HAD the money to make all your payments, I'd tell you to make the payments. You NEED to improve your income situation. But in the meantime, you CANNOT pay everything you owe (and yeah, even though your parents put the debt in their name, if it was at your request you do owe it). If you can't pay everything you owe, you can't pay it.

B of A is going to say all kinds of **** to you. They're collectors that are calling you - its their job to freak you out make you angry insult you whatever to get you to REACT instead of THINK.

All you do is say, "I can't pay you now. I will pay you when I can. Meanwhile, under the law (the fair debt collections act - read it), you can't call me again for 2 weeks, so if you do, I'm going to sue you and you'll end up paying my debts for me. Good bye!" and hang up.
If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

Don't be a slave to the phone. When the collectors call, make a note of the number they are calling from. You do have caller ID, don't you? Don't answer the phone if you don't recognize the caller name/number. Or, if you don't have caller ID, let your machine pick up and screen the calls. If you don't have caller ID or a machine, get whichever is the cheapest. If you don't talk to the collectors directly they can't use their psychological tricks to bully you.

Exactly. You're doing all you can, there's no room for more. So don't let them make you feel bad or stress you out. If the callers do manage to make you angry/stressed/scared/whatever, hang up the phone and remind yourself that, heck, you're doing all you can!

Living in fear of your phone sucks. Been there. You don't HAVE to, though. If you know already the address of those calling you, send them a letter stating they are not to call you at home - or at work. They have to abide by it. You can tell them over the phone but that only stands for two weeks then they can start to call again and you need to tell them all over again. I suggest writing a letter to each one and stating you wish only to be contacted by mail. Actually, I think you can tell them to just contact the debt consolidation people instead.
Read lots, Tony, and learn your rights. Learn what their limits are by law, what they are and aren't allowed to do. What they can and can't say.
Just DON'T talk to them on the phone. Get everything in writing. On the phone they can say horrible things and bend your arm into sending them what you can't afford and you will undoubtedly be in trouble for something you unintentionally say. You deserve to be treated with respect, they wont give it, they are bullies. You are doing a lot to own up to and clean up the mess you are in. You certainly don't need collectors calling you day and night harrassing you and bringing you down, intimidating you or just plain ruining a good day.
