Moving to Oregon
So I have added a signature (hopefully) that will show the expenses I will have in my move. I am starting this thread because I can already see how these expenses will start spiralling out of control.
My family in Oregon are trying to help but it will create an interesting situation. My brother was a little slow to understand that he could "help me" into the poorhouse if he eagerly got me into an apartment that I can't afford. Oh, well. I just wish I could have a place to stay so I won't have to stay at my older brother's while I look. It will be interesting.
Zhu Zhu pet was purchased because I "could" and they are selling at about $40 on Craig's list. Digital camera was so I could sell furniture and more on Craig's List. MP3 player was pure luxury. Space bags are for packing for the train trip. I get 3 extra boxes/bags of 50 lbs apiece so I plan on using the Space Bags so I can put my clothes and linens in them at the 50 lb rate. Extra bags will be sold on Craig's list.
Oh, and Casey is the cat. Don't see a cat on the train for 40 hours.Go West Young(ish) (Wo)Man,
Let your troubles stay east.

Again, good luck with your move.
I see $250 for mailing books...are you mailing media rate usps and if not are you aware of it? Tons and tons cheaper.Bank of America is THE godfather of Hell with Wells Fargo running neck and neck. When the world ends the only things that will be left are cockroaches, Walmart, Wells Fargo and Bank of America. Not necessarily in that order. The order remains to be seen.

Yes, Media Rate, that is why it is seperate from household. I am figuring 10-12 boxes at 50 lbs. I was an English major. Note that I have sorted out 12 boxes to stay in NJ somewhere. It is my personal insanity. I kept telling myself as I sorted "Powells will be there if you really want this, and there is Gutenberg on line for all the copyright free stuff. And there are libraries. You can let this go..."
If I can get the books under budget I may set that aside and go hog wild at Powells as a reward.Go West Young(ish) (Wo)Man,

I`d have to have my books too Kita (also an English major). I just can`t part with them. In my opinion, an expense that is well worthwhile.

Travel light. The baggage of the past can only hold you back.

Anw819 :
I have a ton of weight-watcher cookbooks from the 60's to the 80's that I am planning to leave here in NJ. I also collect old cookbooks but those are coming with... (Better Home and Gardens from the 50's). I'll be in Piscataway the week after next...that is farthest south I'll be.
Yeah, I think I have it all figured out, it is just the surprises that I am worried about. That and my family. "If you want to spend and extra 12 dollars, you can double the space on on your MP3 player, and for an extra 10 beyond that..." sigh.Go West Young(ish) (Wo)Man,

If you go to the FedEx website, you can set up an account and you will get 10% off the counter rate. If you ship to a home address, it costs a little more (FedEx Home Delivery). BUT you can ship regular FedEx Ground if you ship to a friend/family member's business.
FedEx includes online tracking and insurance for the first $100 per box in the shipping price. I sell online and ship everything over 3 lbs. with FedEx. No matter who you ship with, fragile items should be packed to withstand a 4-story fall.
If you have any shipping questions, please feel free to contact me. I have been shipping USPS Priority Mail and FedEx Ground for 6 years now.
Good Luck!Mary

NikoSann asked:
"Are you excited or dreading it? "
And the answer is: Yes. I was very excited at first, but now am reallizing what a job it will be and that my brothers aren't going to be on "sync" with me as far as looking for things. I am far closer to black belt frugal than they are and I think it will cause a little bit of strain. Just because I can't afford or don't want to buy something doesn't mean that they need to help me. And I do want my own place when I get there. I do NOT want to camp out with either brother but I don't want to look ungrateful. I would be grateful for them to look at apartments, not to have them say "oh, you can stay with us" and then be told in a week that I have to get out. (My sil is interesting)
About shippiong...I don't know why I haven't checked out FedEx. I have called moving companies (only 2000 lbs for $1600 which is out of my budget), Uhaul (oddly enough $1600 for truck rental only), and the post office.
I do have one large "hang in the living room" mirror and a small dresser to ship. I am in a quandry about the mirror. I have been trying to imagine my misery if it breaks in shipping after I have paid all that money. I suppose I could insure it against the mail expense if it breaks. Would that be allowed or could I only claim if it was lost? The dresser was a gift from my deceased father so I will send that, but it isn't as fragile.
Okay, off to see what prices are like at FedEx.Go West Young(ish) (Wo)Man,
Let your troubles stay east.

So issues with one of my part-time jobs. Apparently the hourly rate (which I started in Nov), is paid monthly, on the 20th of the month after the hours. It is a possibly illegal method of payment, but for now I have to live with it. I will probably write a friendly letter AFTER I get my last check in Oregon.
So that means I will have to borrow money from my brother since I will have to use my BEF for moving expenses here and need to rent an apartment there. sigh.
One the good side. Shipping. It does appear that Fed-Ex ground will be cheaper and if it isn't delivered in X number of days, there is a refund of the postage. I am hoping (but not budgeting) that a couple of packages drag their imaginary feet crossing the country. And there is tracking, which is great because with parcel post there is just the mailing into a black hole of someday somehow it will get there...Go West Young(ish) (Wo)Man,
Let your troubles stay east.

I just want to wish you good luck on your move and finding work in Oregon.
When my DH and I got married we moved his stuff from Washington to Iowa using Fed-ex and had no problems. We found that they were the cheapest method of moving. I think it cost us about $300 to ship 7 or 8 large (22x18x18) boxes plus a few smaller boxes. We could not have rented vehicle and driven for that price.Julie

For the dresser, mirror, large things, etc. you might check uship.com. You can create a listing for what you need to have shipped from point a to point b and people can "bid" on it. If you are flexible about when it is picked up and delivered you COULD get a deal.
GOOD LUCK!Mary
