I hate taxes.
DH and I lived in WV last year. DH worked at a job, but I could not find a job. At first after our taxes they said we owed them money. That has never happened before and we have never owed money and DH has been at the same company for like 5 years. Made the same amount of money. We called and they said they messed up we came out even which again is weird, but what ever.
We get a letter in the mail a few weeks ago from the state of WV saying we owe them $500!! I was like WHAT?! DH called and they said its right we owe them $500. We cannot figure out why. It makes no sense. I hate TAXES!!!
This year we are going to H&R block. DH was on short term disability for about 6 months with no taxes taken out so we are prepared to owe money but I want it done right.
Ugh!

Do you not keep records of your income tax returns yearly?
Sure, H&R will do good and they want you to pay them extra to insure any mistakes they make on your returns and you will pay them a certain percent of your return or not out of your ying yang.
Who filed your taxes when you lived in WV?

If you can't have whomever did your taxes last year look at the notice about the $500, you can have H&R block check your last years return to make sure that it was done correctly and that you really do owe WV the extra money. If there is an error, you can do an amended return. Be sure to take your last years return and all of the paperwork including the WV notice. I wouldn't pay the money to WV until you actually understand what it is for.

His disability money was from WV? And no taxes taken out. So you probably do owe money. BUT make sure someone double checks the numbers for you before you pay anything.
Was ths statement they sent you ...enough information so someone can look at it, and see how they came up with the final numbers.
With the economy the way it is, states are looking for any owed money that they can find due to them.
