Default Canceling a credit card can be easy..

At least Amex Canada is. I called in, expecting to get the usual "but.. but.." Instead, I got an automated system that allowed me to cancel the card just like that. I listened to the terms at the end (e.g., I'm still responsible for anything that got charged at the last minute, etc.) but other than that it was a 2 minute call.

I did a final payment on it today and we'll see what is still outstanding once all is said and done. (maybe $2-5?) But I have to admit it went easier than expected. At least I won't be tempted to use it since clearing it completely.

    Who knew?

We were a little disappointed when we canceled the cards we held. None of the lenders really fought us at all...

So disappointed, I was all geared up for fun phone calls.
If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

LOL.. sounds like me but I wonder if the difference is between larger lenders (direct to Amex, Visa, MC, Citi, etc.) vs smaller banks/credit unions?

We canceled... lets see ... Chase/Amazon, WaMu (formerly Providian), Sears, Penney's, and a Credit Union visa (the only one that had a balance, thus my signature line). None of them put up a fuss...

I too think you boys are crazy. I HATE when I call to cancel a credit card and they want me to talk to another person to do so because here comes the pressure to keep it.

I recently cancelled my citibank platinum card because they wanted to charge me a $60 yearly fee. I have had that card a good 15 years and the limit was very high if we cared to use it ( we didn't)

I was shocked she didn't even remind me of my great 5.99% rate just closed the card! I was prepared for an argument.

Did you use the card at all? I ask because we have the same card and have not received any notice of a fee.

I used it maybe once in the last year. They sent me a statement which they never do on a 0 balance and I always had online statements. I noticed on the statement a spot that said yearly fee $0. I turned it over and read on the back about the yearly fee so I called. You might want to ask.

Now discover is my only card. Hope we don't travel somewhere that won't take it!
