I'm not surprised by this at all and honestly have seen it coming. The loss of taxes caused by the home values dropping, people unable to pay their taxes due to job loss and many other things have cities looking to be creative to save some money.
If it saves a few dollars a month, I'm all for losing some service. Is it time for some cities to join Frugal Village?Russ

I saw an episode on.. was it 60 minutes? Sunday... The show was all about Detroit. Anyone else see it? It showed a very very hard hit by the recession, city. Is it really like that? Or was it sensationalized? Literally whole city blocks were totally vacant with most of the houses torn down. It was unbelieveable!

Yes, I saw that and there are literally thousands of vacant homes in Detroit. As a matter of fact, the city is considering moving residents from areas such as this to more poulated areas to start consolidating the city and it's services. Current estimated Detroit population is between 820,000 to 835,000 down from a high of about 1.4 million.

I saw just a little bit of the 60 Minutes show on Detroit, overhead shots of block after block of abandoned buildings. I believe more and more cities will experience this type of "exodus." It's really sad to see.

We pay $2.00/month for our street lights. Have been since we moved within the city limits 7 1/2 years ago. I wouldn't be surprised to see this go up. They have already jacked up water and sewer rates.
“When you get to the end of all the light you know
and it's time to step into the darkness of the unknown,
faith is knowing that one of two things will happen:
you will be given something solid to stand on,
or you will be taught how to fly.” - Edward Teller
“Our Earth is degenerate in these later days;
there are signs that the world is speedily
coming to an end;
bribery and corruption are common; children no
longer obey their parents;
every man wants to write a book and the
end of the world is evidently approaching.”
— From a translation of an inscription on
an Assyrian clay tablet, circa 2800 B.C.E.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

I think we will see all states and cities do some REAL CREATIVE FINANCING..........with anything that they can get through the legislatures.
It could get real ugly for the 'middle class'......and the poor.
