    Default House Question

i'm not sure how to handle this one.

Sunday night approximately 9pm I was awakened with pounding outside in the street. At first I thought a couple neighborhood kids were bouncing a basketball.

turns out it was the gas company. There was a gas leak on the property line between our house and neighbors house. They dug up the yard, and part of the street. They pounded on the street all night long until 5am. I work third shift, so it didn't really bother me, but the rest of the neighborhood was pretty pissed with all the noise.

I went into the basement last night as we are having family over this coming weekend. The floor in the basement now has a big crack in it. i'd say about 1/8" and it is a diagonal but not a straight line. I'm guessing the jackhammering in the street caused this.

What should I do to take care of this?

Story of my life. In 2007 we had 78000 worth of debt, and we climbed out under it, on top of paying for a surgery with cash, bought a house, had a foundation shift and $11000 in repairs later we are good to go.. then I hear the words "I'm pregnant!"

I've been told by numerous concrete contractors:
There are 2 types of concrete, Cracked concrete and concrete that is going to crack.
You can try to talk to the gas company but I think you're SOL and your best bet is to seal it but I think it will grow, slightly, over time.

I bet they'd be even more upset if their houses exploded.

I would call the gas company, explain the situation and see what is offered. Can't hurt.

You can't receive if you don't ask. I'm betting you won't get anywhere though.... It's not like you can prove that it happened because of them, and that the crack hasn't always been there. Still worth the phone call though. I wonder if your neighbors had anything funny happy at their place.
