    Default Home Financial knowledge

This article>> Moms, teach your daughters about money too - Money - TODAYshow.com... got me to thinking about how much the S.O. knows about the finances of the home.

Do you AND your significant other know about all the accounts, where the investments are and how to access them in the event of the other ones death?

What about life insurance policies? Do you both know what company to call?

Those of you who are organized in this area, how do you do it? All in a Fireproof safe?

Ourselves - all organized in one file in our fireproof safe.

when I was married I knew nothing. literally. I didn't want to be bothered with all the details and I left everything up to him.

    funny how things change

I have all of my papers in two plastic file keeper things. anyone looking for them could easily find them. Lets just hope the house doesn't burn down in the meantime.

This is one of those things that I keep telling myself I need to do. I should get a special folder or safe deposit box or something with all the pertinent information.

In case I die - I do have an index card on my desk with all the financial institutions we have accounts with and all of the account numbers, logins, and passwords. DH knows where it is.

Dh isn't and doesn't want to be involved with finances, and seems perfectly happy for me to handle it (and me to deal with the stress). I have a little black book that explains everything should I die (seriously). He does know where I file everything, but that's about it. The black book will tell him the rest, assuming he reads it! LOL

Charlie knows the basics. Things like we have CDs and what bank they're at. Some of our things, such as the kids bonds, are in a safety deposit box at the bank. The rest of it ( the general types of stuff like our normal account information) is just filed in the file cabinet. This means he'd have to send one of the kids to find it because he can't ever find anything in there and the boys have no problem finding anything.
Most of the time he just wants to know the general aspects of our finances and which direction we're going in as he is well aware that he is definately a man with a hole in his pocket.

I know the basics. I don't know the easiest way to access them on the computer though. That is something that Greebo and I have been remiss about. I would love to have it all written down in one book.... in time.

We aren't doing renovations on Sunday - that would be a good day to go through it all.
If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

I do the daily finances and investing, my husband doesn't have the time to deal with it. I don't think he knows what accounts we have, but we only deal with one institution so if anything happened to me he would find it all.
