Default Anyone notice less money in their check in 2011?

I got my first check of 2011 today. $15.00 less in my check than the last check of 2010. I called my payroll and they said a new federal tax went into effect. I thought middle class taxes were not going to increase. I feel like I am getting hit from all directions. 3 kids in college and gas and food just seem to be going up. Our health insurance has increased. Anyone else feeling the crunch???

We noticed that DH's first check was also less than last year's checks. I get paid monthly, so I haven't noticed anything yet as I get paid on the 25th. He is paying an extra $38 a week or you could say $152 a month.

Yep we noticed. There is another thread on this subject too. It was explained that the SSI tax went down from 6.2% to 4.2%, but the make work pay tax ended. The SSI is supposed to be for only one year then it will go back UP to 6.2%

Yes, it's probably the effect of the Make Work Pay ending. That was the deal where less was withheld throughout the year so it was available month by month, rather than being refunded at tax time as part of the stimulus - or something like that, I think.

Until they get a clue and lose all their residents and Corporations to the other states. The Corporation tax will now go to 7.5 - 8 percent making it the highest corporate tax in the Industrialized World.
I am sure many will be leaving.

Yeah... It is $20 lower than what I project it was going to be. Unfortunately, to make the bills work, DH and I both lost $10 out of our personal money. We are down to $20 a month each.

My hubby, who gets paid every 2 weeks had $20 more in his check. So I guess its $10 more a week. Well take it gladfully! Every penny counts!

    Theresa

now that I think of it though, I wonder if he meant $20 per week instead of per 2 weeks. I'll ask him tomorrow. But wouldn't that be nice! I'm hoping anyway.

Your HR explained it incorrectly. It isn't a new Federal Tax that caused the decrease in your check--it's the expiration of a tax credit. Social Security withholdings did decrease though which offset the difference for some people. Our HR sent a memo out with our previous paystubs.

Hubby and I's checks this week were only for a week in the new year due to our pay schedule. My check increased by 5$. I haven't seen hubby's paystub to look at the hard numbers and since he had overtime, the amount is skewed anyway. Since he has a pension and has no SS withholdings, his check will decrease.

BF's #'s are skewed as well. Normally he only has a couple hours of overtime, but this past week he had 11. There's no way I'd be able to figure out how it affected this check. I'll pay attention next week, as the hours he worked this week were closer to normal. I don't know how it affected my check either because this was the first week I had 40 hours. I started this job the week before Xmas, and so the first two weeks I worked I had 32 hours (being off Xmas Eve and New Years Eve.) The temp agency doesn't do paid holidays :p I'm glad some of you are seeing increases, though...and to those who aren't, at least you're finding ways to make your budget work....because you know a lot of people won't bother adjusting their spending and the difference will end up on a credit card or taken out of savings accounts.

I can't wait for it here - the company said they don't have the financials figured out but we will get a retro paycheck when they figure it out.
The problem is our health insurance went up alot - we even cancelled vision insurance

Dh gets paid every two weeks, his went up $4.76. But, I haven't seen the breakdown on that as to the reason for the change.

I am in Mass teacher retirement plan because I work for a school, which means I do not pay SS, so instead of my check increasing because of the SS credit, mine went down! And I did get a memo after the calling about the expiration of the tax credit. Oh well, I guess I will have to adjust... It was just not what I needed right now. I wonder how many other tax credits expired. I thought they voted to extend them...Guess we will find out on April 15th.
