Really screwed up withholding this year. We ended up getting almost $14,000 back. All that is going into our emergency fund as I am going to be losing my job soon.

i got back like $40 and hubby got back like $200.

i know it's best to break even or close to even...but i do miss the days of getting like 2 or 3 thousand dollars back.

We got $7,000 back. DH gets bonuses so 25% is taken out- but we get it back during tax time. We also added two more dependents this year and we got EITC. Since we're overseas and our states are Nebraska and Oregon, we didn't have to pay state tax.

We bought new all-season tires for our SUV's- they need them. Paid the German water company the 500 Euro we had in water overage when we moved out of our rental house. And the rest we're holding onto until we make sure we're getting paid with this government shutdown!

Once we are more confident in actually getting paid, we'll pay off credit cards

We just did our taxes this morning/afternoon. (Because it takes me an hour to do DH's taxes... blech.)

We're getting all of our money back. That's $6,895.13. That's due to us selling the house and paying real estate fees, legal fees and the money that DH is allowed to claim for Living Out Allowance.

What will we be doing with this money?

    1) Finishing off the payment to the inlaws for the CC loan. We owe them about $3300 still.

    2) The rest is unknown at this time. We have to replace the hot water heater by June. We also have to have a basement window put into DS12's room.

So those taxes are done. I'm super scared of being audited.

As long as you keep adequate records being audited really isn't that bad. It's stressful and inconvenient, but not the end of the world.

I have been through 3 audits and came out fine... and that was without any software or tax advisors.

Story of my life. In 2007 we had 78000 worth of debt, and we climbed out under it, on top of paying for a surgery with cash, bought a house, had a foundation shift and $11000 in repairs later we are good to go.. then I hear the words "I'm pregnant!"

You should see my paper trail. I think you could stretch it from here to Calgary. I'm so OCD about keeping everything. It's funny. I think it's the stress of being audited. I haven't been before and I've heard about how some people can't handle the stress. I even had DH email me the Excel sheet that shows his trips and his mileage, plus how much he would have been allowed each day for meals. I usually keep everything as far as taxes are concerned and receipts too.

    Adjust your withholding!!!
If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

I sure hated to write a check to the IRS yesterday but it was nice not giving them an interest free loan this past year.
