when you're not paying for CC debt.

It's so odd...

We bought the new house last month. We've been in it for one month and have made two mortgage payments on it. We've also been paying other bills and doing things that we normally do. There is one exception, though. That exception is that we haven't had to make any debt payments to the Mastercard, VISA or Best Buy card in which we carry an outstanding balance from last year. We have used both the MC and VISA, but for large purchases that carrying cash and using our debit card for wouldn't be allowed (we have limits on the debit cards). Those large purchases were for things for the new house. But like good people, we've paid off those balances. And you know what?

We both still have money in our accounts!

I have three cheques waiting to be deposited (which will happen tomorrow) and we're making payments to the inlaws for the help they gave us a couple of years ago. The debt that we have with them will be paid off as soon as we process the tax return, and I believe we'll still have some left over. I'm spending this weekend going back through the Excel spreadsheet and looking for the paperwork that I'd been working on to show us how much we owe them.

We're paying more for the house. The house insurance doubled. But we still have cash. It's so weird. It's like paying off all of those CCs gave us back our freedom. We're not eating out. We're not ordering in. DH is cutting back on smoking, but is spending more on gas than we were in Calgary.

I'm even able to put $100 a month into savings and once we pay off the inlaws, we're putting $100 a month into an RRSP and $100 a month into an RESP.

It's fantastic!

I'm not sure how to classify this, but it sure was worth reflecting upon.

I'm new to this elation as well. This is the first month that I do not have a house payment and LOC payment. It's a great feeling, huh? Congrats on your hard work. Kudos to you! Thank you for the inspiration to others.

Absolutely! It's a heady, lighter-than-air feeling to know you do not have that debt. And if this feels good, just wait until the house is paid off, and the inlaws are paid. You will be positively floating!!! Way to go!!!

What you have said supports the notion that debt is slavery:

For me this was just about a year ago. The feeling of calling up my credit card company and telling them "now that my balance is paid off, please cancel the automatic monthly payments" -- nothing like it!! Enjoy your FREEDOM!
