I think that is my biggest issue right now (well, BESIDES THE DEBT!)

I don't trust myself. At all. I want something that will keep me from overdrafting and I won't be as tempted to just swipe my card like I have been doing.

I am trying to figure out the best way with the envelope system.

Are you saying that simply having the checking account cost you more than $45 a year, or the overdraft fees were what was pushing you over $45 a year? If it's the former, I agree with Greebo. If it's the latter, then it isn't a problem with the checking account itself.

Do what you feel is best, but I'm curious as to how paying for money orders and fees is cheaper than the free checking I've had at various institutions for the last 20 years.

You have to do what will work for you......for whatever reason.

I have free checking, and free checks, and it works for me.

Consider all fees when making your choice........and what
will work for your behavior. Then go for it........

I was going to say what the above poster said. If the money order gets lost it's still your responsibility to pay it so it's going to get paid twice. The post office ( best place to get it ) can put a tracer on it but it can take up to 2 months before it is either found or refunded..

That said, if you are bound and determined to do away with the checking I agree with inkstain. The pre-paid debit card. Hubby has one. You can't spend more than what's on it. There's a $1 charge when it's used but it's rarely used. There's a $3 charge when you put money on it so when you load it you load it...not $20 increments. Like Ink, it works here.
We also have a checking tho to be honest, but for somethings it works.
Bank of America is THE godfather of Hell with Wells Fargo running neck and neck. When the world ends the only things that will be left are cockroaches, Walmart, Wells Fargo and Bank of America. Not necessarily in that order. The order remains to be seen.
