i just sold a bunch of mine
pawn shop
if the going rate for gold is x the shop will offer 1/2x, so that they may stay in business.11% gross to retirement
10% takehome to tithe and offerings
emergency fund maintained at 3000(works for me)
credit card debt 7500
mortgage free
freedom accounts/sinking funds that ebb and flow
then live on the rest!
i am trying something new. LDS church advises savings or debt repayment should be the same as the tithe. 10% each.

Funny you should ask and I should see this --- I work in a jewelry store! adn we buy gold a give advice. 1st know that you will not get what you pai for it.... The rule of thumb is you will get about 1/3 to 1/2 of its value. If you want to make more money for yourself sell online... like craigslist or ebay but be careful. Another option is a jewelry store that buys gold/stones. Get 3 estimates before you sell ANYTHING. Ask for the Pennyweight at each place you go so you make sure that no one is weighting their scale. Then go to the one that was paying you the most and ask them if they can pay you just a little more.
Pawns don't pay as much as a Jewelry store will - but those overnight cash for gold place's are usually very unexperienced and can make mistakes in your favor
This are a few options for ya --- good luck

I'd try eBay. You won't get much for it from the pawn shops.

Mahalo everyone for your ideas - I shall be checking around. The pieces I have to sell were from an estate sale (veryfew) or from a jewelry store that I managed over 30 years ago. Shall let you know what I discover here on my little island!!

Frugal Frannie does this...maybe she would have some good suggestions. She sounds pretty sucessful at it.

MM if you are going to sell on ebay buy a scale. I think you can find them for under $15. People will want to see your items on the scale for gram weight or they might not bid. The one I have will give you the weight in grams, etc. I asked the pawn shop to give me the price in grams. You can then compare what is being offered by close out sales on ebay for say 14k gold put them in your watched list and see what they close at. Good Luck

I have sold gold and silver directly to refiners before and got much more for them than the jewelry stores offered. They will pay you just slightly under its current value in weight. Keep in mind they will give you nothing for the stones and workmanship though.
