I have Home & Business 2008 on the other computer. I stopped tracking stuff in 2010 because I got so far behind when we moved (computer was in storage for 5 months). Then when I went back my file was all messed up.

Anyway, I want something on my laptop. I have a Windows 7 and a Windows XP environment installed, but would prefer to use the Windows 7.

    Does anyone know:
    a) will my 2008 version run in Windows 7
    b) is there any other compelling reason to upgrade to 2012 - does it do anything new
    c) if I do get the 2012, will I be able to import data from 2008?

If I decide to upgrade, I want to do it now as I need to buy Turbotax sometime in the next week or two and it's cheaper if I buy them at the same time.

I decided to try the old one and it doesn't work anyway. Quicken purposely breaks it after three years to force you to buy a new one. I thought it was only going to stop the automatic updates - which I never used anyway - but it won't even allow me to import a file. So I guess I need to buy the update regardless of whether or not it has any new features.

Yes, you can only update/import so many years back. So you could import Quicken 2010 into 2012, but not 2008.

I've been using Quicken 2011 for just over a year, and I'm not particularly pleased with it. I was a MS Money user and when they stopped supporting the automatic downloads in 2010 I ended up buying Quicken 2011. The automatic downloads work only sporadically - a big PIA to me since that's the reason I bought it in the first place. I've spent probably 20 hours of time over the last year configuring it to get the displays and things I want, and there are STILL things it refuses to do. I had considered upgrading to 2012 to see if it would fix them, but most of reviews I've read say that it doesn't, so I don't want to waste the money.

I've started using Mint online, and that has it's own set of features that I'd like that are missing, but at least nothing is broken. In the past 3 months I've started just using both, doing some things in one program and some things in the other. Really frosts me that it's basically double the time, especially since Quicken owns Mint - you'd think they'd both be functional with the same features - but no.

I am switching to mint. I am just using Quicken to keep a checking register.

But MINT IS FREE and better:

Story of my life. In 2007 we had 78000 worth of debt, and we climbed out under it, on top of paying for a surgery with cash, bought a house, had a foundation shift and $11000 in repairs later we are good to go.. then I hear the words "I'm pregnant!"

Honestly, if Mint would accurate project future transactions - I'd use just Mint in a heartbeat. One of the features I like about the Quicken register is that I can enter in all my transactions for the current month and know what I'm working with. You CAN enter future transactions in Mint, but I've never had it recognize them successfully, and it won't recognize them as transfers from one account to another. If they would fix that, I would switch to Mint only in a heartbeat.
