This is mind boggling - $1.8 billion spent on Boxing Day in Canada
http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/a.../26/c3769.html
Totally mind boggling and this is on credit cards.
This is even more bizzarre - remember this is for Canada only:
To date (November 26-December 20th), Visa has processed over 97 million credit card transactions, totalling over $9 billion in sales volume

CJ, it's madness. This is from our local paper:
Buyers in Boxing Day frenzy
By Darren Behar
26dec05
"BARGAIN hunters are ready to go sales crazy, splashing out $13 billion as Australia revels in a record-breaking, post-Christmas spending spree.
The massive total - forecast by the Australian Retailers Association - is equivalent to every man, woman and child in Australia forking out $650 for bargains. And the ARA says NSW will lead the way, spending $4.3 billion when the sales begin in earnest tomorrow."
Most of the people who a part of this spending frenzy will be up to their ears in debt already.

Holly, it wasn't us either. We didn't step foot in a store since Christmas.
Rhonda, the interesting thing is most of the money was spent on clothing. Good gravy, how much clothing does one need, kwim.

Clothing! good grief. You must have some smartly dressed people running around over there.
I was trying to work out the last time I went to the shopping mall. I only bought two christmas gifts this year. One online, one from a local producer. I think I might have gone to the mall with my sister when she was here which I think was at the beginning of the year. Whenever it was, I can't see myself going back in 2006.
As you know CJ, I'm an atheist, but even so I don't understand how this crass spending frenzy seems to have taken over what is meant to be the spirit of Christmas. If anyone can explain it to me, I'm all ears.

I'll admit, DH went to Walmart on Boxing Day... because the local village market was closed. He did buy more than I sent him for, but the items I did send him for were much cheaper at WM then they would have been locally. Nothing on CC though.. nothing has been charged since November on those, and nothing will be anytime in the near future either!

WTG, Rhonda!I am impressed. You are definately in the minority!
Clothes! I thought it would be electronics.
My Sil is a good example. She was saying she doesn't need to do laundry often because they have so many clothes! And when she does it is such a chore!
And what was her favourite gift? Both her and her Dd got GC's to old Navy. And where was she headed for boxing day????You guessed it, Old Navy! I even stuck my neck out and pointed out she was just saying she had too many clothes? She was anoyed with me.

Amy, I said it was mind boggling. I don't understand it, don't think I ever will.
My sil who is married to my brother buys clothes on sale and then leaves them hanging in the closet, never wearing them. My mom says she is such a good shopper, she buys when things are on sale. Hello!!! If you don't wear them or already have closets full of clothes you don't wear, it isn't much of a sale.
btw - this is only for Canada. I can't imagine what the States was being as you are a whole lot bigger than we are.
