insurance?
We are shopping around for insurance and I'm hoping I can get opinions from everybody here about which ones to avoid and which ones you have had a good experience with. thanks.

I have health and disability insurance through work (a state medical school/hospital), so my options there would not be yours and I have no advice at all.
For auto and renters insurance, I have used State Farm for about 11 years now. I have had a couple of car claims with them -- once when the car was stolen, and once (maybe twice? I can't recall) for storm damage - a broken windshield. I had no problems with the claims. The agents were easy to work with and they were paid promptly and without fuss. I have not shopped around for rates for quite a while (I should be frugally embarrassed to admit this) but several years ago I kept getting the AARP (yeah, I'm old) letters bragging that they had the best rates going. So I gave them a call and after we went through all the details there was, literally, a stunned silence on the other end of the line. My State Farm policy was about $300 a year under their best offer. Then I was stunned. But I can't say how their rates stack up generally. I do know that my claims, to my surprise, didn't seem to affect my rates. I've probably just been lucky and mostly kept a low profile!Donna

We have Allstate for our car insurance, and while it could have been worse, I just haven't been impressed with them. I need to compare their rates with State Farm. The rest of my family has used SF for years and years and love them.

I use a broker-- here in my province the BCAA (auto association) has good deals for members, they act as a broker to get the best rates.

We use Cincinnatti, but I think they only cover certain states. We've had two claims with them in two years and they haven't hiked our rates through the roof or anything like that. Overall, we're pleased, but I still shop around

Allen,
You might want to check with AAA. they seem to have good rates, also don't forget about discounts for things, multi cars, age, driving distance.
Good Luck,
