With any questionable debt (how can he OWE the people he worked for?), send a certified letter in writing disputing the debt. That gives you 30 days to research and it requires them to give you proof that the debt is legitimate.

Like Dave Ramsey says, debt collectors only lie when their lips are moving!!!! Don't roll over and pay until you know the truth.

I would be careful. Years ago someone called my husband from an old phone company account that had been turned over to a collection agency. It was an old room mates bill, but he had used my husbands name. My husband without thinking, basically told them to go too Hell..and hung up. The very next day our bank account was empty and he had a garnishment placed on his check. Always try to work something out with them, they will work with you if...you agree to pay them back.

Insurance sales is a commission job. You can leave a company and owe them money if they advanced you a draw against your commission earnings, and you didn't meet the sales quota. That's usually the primary reason.

I'm surprised that they didn't give you options for paying back the money before they turned it over to a collection agency.

Legally there's no way a Collection Agency can garnish your checks and clear out your bank acct without obtaining the info directly from you and without a court date. They break the law everyday though -- its disgusting so I agree. Be careful! And if you try to work something out with a CA -- you'll get a PAID collection acct which is as bad a mark as a UNPAID collection acct.
