I would love to leave and live somewhere that pays for my healthcare, at least. I don't see much help here in US and I'd like to actually enjoy my twilight years without worrying so much about the cost of living expenses. Any other places like SA? I've heard of someone who moved to Jamaica but that was eons ago.
~I personally wouldn't move out of the USA no matter how cheap I could live. My family and the things I love are here. And at retirement I hope to have grandkids to spoil! But it might be a great idea for alot of other retirees.~

I'm with Constance on this one. I would never leave the USA. Not only because I would never want to live that far from my family, but because I love it here. And lets face it, even with the problems we do have, we still have it a lot better than other places.

personally, I'm afraid to live in another country b/c of how things are now with terrorism, etc. I feel safer here. Although, we have been wanting to move to another state where the cost of living is lower(taxes & more freedoms)...we've done our research and the toss up is between alaska & missouri.....looks more like missouri
Wanted to add that I remember when my first husband talked about moving to the Phillipines because the cost of living is cheaper (at least back then, I dunno about now) We didn't have to work, he had passive income plus Social Security coming in. He was an abusive jerk and just the thought of being stuck in another country with him and not knowing anyone there and being dependent on his income sent shivers down my spine.

Having read a lot of the posts on this forum I think that the USA is a cheap place to live , you pay a lot less for food than I do and fuel is a lot cheeper and from what I have read on other pages houses are a lot cheeper too .
Maybe some countries are very cheap to live in but that comes with all sorts of other problems , try counting your blessings for all the d cheap food etc.
I wouldn't consider moving out of the country myself, but I have heard that many places in South American/Central America are good for retirement. Here's a link to an article on Nicaragua.
I can't manage to move from the midwest, much less to another country. My husband would like to move to eastern Montanna, but I can't be away from my kids and grandkids. Living in another country probably isn't an option for me...even if it is cheaper. I love the USA!!

Working on being more frugal is that is possible!!
No cc debt----1 car payment
only payments are the necessities..house payment(which will be paid off in 6 years..or sooner I hope) and just your run of mill bills...grocery's, utilities, insurance..you know the icky stuff that goes on and on.
Back before the dotcom bust I was looking at summer homes in Belize. They have a well-oiled system to bring people from wealthy countries there to help their country's plight. I love it there because life is so simple and the people are pro-American...and English is the majority language. Land and housing are quite affordable by American standards.
But it still isn't America. We live in such a great, diverse, and free nation. I don't think I could ever give that up. The sad part is our healthcare system. I know I'm not alone in that I don't work so much for the money--but for the health benefits.
No way I'd go to another country to live, this is home, both of my brothers are in the airforce and serve our country....we gripe and complain here but I like to think that's been genetically handed down from our forefathers....they weren't satisfied either and so here America is....Anyway the discontent is what keeps us continually striving to make our country better....so though I'm thankful for all the good in our country I'm also thankful for the discontent......sorry got a little off track there......the answer would be no especially at retirement when I think it would be harder to adjust to all the changes you'd have to get use to.

We have looked at both Belize and Costa Rica for our retirement. Not just for the cost of living but as mission fields. DH attended Johnson Bible College and I have worked in charities all my life. We look at this as our chance to give back in retirement. As for the kids we can always travel back to the states to visit with them.
