RENT FREEEEEEEEE
we've (me and dylan) been together for about two years now and we've been living together for about a year and a half. he moved in with me in july of 2005 and we had decided that it was time for a move. we've just been in this apartment for too long. before it was nice, things were quiet and everything was good. mostly young couples and single professionals living here. now its families jammed packed with kids. the apartment below us is an efficiency(under 50sqft) and has 8 men living in it! the parking is ridiculous and it was just becoming a pain.
this whole weekend i spent looking for a new place and it was kicking my butt because i hadnt realized how expensive all of the "nicer" parts of town were. anyways.. i was telling my dad last night about the whole process and about all of my new ideas on how to save money so that i we would be able to make rent. ** we're currently paying 600 plus utilities plus school loans, our cars are paid off and we dont really have any credit cards ** and everything outside of oak cliff (part of town we live in now) is 800 plus utilities. there would also be the increase in mileage for the both of us since we currently live pretty close to our jobs and so that is def an upside to where we currently are. we also currently have a washer and dryer that came with the apt. everywhere ive looked wants 75 a month extra in order to have a washer/dryer in the unit. at that rate, im basically paying for the appliances and then dont even get to keep them.
anyways.. anyways.. my dad buys "ugly no body wants" houses and then puts maybe ten grand into them and gives them a facelift and sells them for double what he paid for them. he's working on one right now that was a real bargain and is turning out beautifully. and he told me last night before i went home (my grandparents were visiting so i went over to see them) that it wasnt absoluting necessary to sell that house as soon as it was done being remodeled (which will be at the end of january) and that we could live there for two years or so RENT FREE so that we could save money for a house of our own!@!!!!!!
YES I WAS SQUEALING IN MY SLEEP LAST NIGHT!
DYLAN THOUGHT I WAS CRAZY
beeeeyyAAAAAHHHHHHHCUUURRRAAAAHHHHHHHHHH YIIIIIIIIIIPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
So this is my plan. I am going to continue on like I always have and am going to budget my money as though I am paying rent and that money is going straight towards my student loans.. about seven thousand. I know that I wont be able to pay them off completely this year AND save money for a down payment, but I will be able to get a good chunk of them taken care of. Dylan is actually really great about saving money and I thought that he might not like the idea of living in one of my dad’s “projects” for free but he thought it was a terrific idea!!
At first my gut reaction was to schedule a day off from work in order to spend hours at ikea figuring out what I wanted for the house. But I have lived in my apartment for about two years and put good money into a table, couch and regular kitchen appliances (blender, crockpot, microwave things like that) so I wont be buying any of those things because I already have them. I am so excited about being able to put more towards my loans and saving money for my own house! AHHHHHHHHH!@!!

This is something to think about. Save the money from the rent as a downpayment on the house your dads letting you live in. ( If you like it )
Then you don't have to move again. ( just a thought )
