Oprah's site used to have something about how to decide what percentage of income should go towards food, housing, car, savings, etc... that might help, or be a place to start.

I checked at oprah.com and there is a section called money and under that there is a pie chart entitled "a year on the diet" if you click under steps and tools there are some worksheets and pie charts and a calculaor under step 5. I found this useful when setting up a budget for myself. It gave me a good place to start and things to consider.

Another good site would be Crown Ministeries web-site.

The CNN Money site helped me a lot when figuring out my budget. Here is a link to the "Ideal Budget Calculator":

I think there's also some printable worksheets on Dave Ramsey's site.

The book "your money of your life" has a huge list of items that I totally forgot about, more along the line of monthly or yearly items that never crossed my mind. By the way I recommend reading the book as well.

I want to do a budget also. I have trouble determining how much to allot for certain items. For instance the kids are always having an inexpected expense at school. This week it is their yearbooks but next week it may be fees for thier sporting activities.

I like pearbudget.com Once I got the hang of it, it was really easy.

I also use excel for my budget and expenses. I have a spreadsheet with each paycheck listed and the expenses I need to pay out of each one. That way when things get right, I can wiggle things from one paycheck to the next to free up some cash when I need it.
