Default OVERDRAFT, beating myself up this morning

I woke up and checked my email to find an overdraft notice. Well good morning to me . I knew it was low, but hubbys pay check was going in the account on auto deposit today. I thought we would just make it and still have about $15.00 in there I let hubby use the debit card last night for a $5.18 purchase Well I looked and his pay check went threw, but of course that debit purchase went on there first. The thing is, I have $40 in cash and a $60 check in my purse that could have been deposited 2 days ago, so I'm very mad at myself right now

Doh! I hate it when that happens.

Are you charged for the over draft?

    I think it's a $35.00 charge, it's been a long..long time since I have done that.

Since you haven't overdrawn in along time, call ask to speak to the manager. Explain to the manager what happened, take responsbility for it, and ask for a refund. We do it a lot for customer's at our bank.

Ask for an exception. My bank gave me one when I pointed out to them that my paycheck had been autodeposited one day late, and that they had put several things through in the order that racked up the most NSF fees. They changed the order of the withdrawals so that the largest went out last, found that it was the only one that had an NSF fee that way, and dropped ALL of the fees - even on the last check. I'm certainly a happy customer after THAT!!!!

Getting dinged with that fee is going to make you pay more attention in the future.

    oh that stinks

I would agree with calling & asking if they can drop the charge .... just this once.... never hurts to ask, the worst they can say is 'no'

I paid a few days late on a cc last year by mistake (I scheduled it as an ebill not realizing that it wouldn't clear by the due date) I called & apologized & they dropped the late fee

I can't believe that your bank would run the deposits thru in a way to make them the most money.

The bank I work for runs all deposits FIRST, then any debits that way we can try to save you fees. Also, we cap out our NSF fees at 5 items per day. Meaning if you have 10 NSF checks at 24$ a pop for being return OR paid, we only charge you for 5.

I know how bad you feel. I definitely would call and see if they would drop the fees.

Yuck!. I have paid many a overdraft fee myself and it makes you sick to your stomach. My bank has overdraft protection linked to my savings acct. and they will transfer the money into checking and only change $5! Maybe your bank has a similar setup...check it out.

This may not be true, but I think I read that banks usually deduct the largest checks first so that payments likely to be more important -- say a mortgage payment -- are more likely to clear. But maybe that's just their story!

It depends on the bank. That's not how my bank works at all. We first process all deposits, check for any stop pays, and then we look at all the stuff we can't return, like debit card purchases. From there on, we try and prioritize what we think the person would like us to pay, but it also depends on their overdraft limit, history, etc.
