    Exclamation Calling all Pirates!!! Arrrrgh!!!!!

If you are a current or former student of East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, your personal information may have been compromised in the past couple of weeks.

An announcement was made this week that an on-line program designed to let students manage their university affairs had an error that allowed others to view SSNs, credit card numbers, etc. The school knows that some credit card numbers were viewed, and they shut down the program immediately. The school is also sending out letters to potentially affected people. However, if you are a current or former student, it might be wise to take preventive measures.

I am a Pirate. I'm not worried because I check my credit reports several times a year, and I put a security freeze on my SSN with all 3 credit bureaus last year. Just thought I would spread the word. So if you are a Pirate, take care. Or if you know someone who is, please let them know.

Something like this just happened at UCLA too, where my boyfriend attended school for a year. He has a fraud alert on his credit now. This is why most schools don't use SSNs anymore. :-/

The ironic thing is ....is that they were setting this on-line system up because ECU is converting to a system that uses an alternative ID number instead of a SSN. They were trying to showcase how easy this would be. The program was called "One Stop". They just really screwed up. I guess it was One Stop Shopping for potential crooks!

When I was in collect many, many moons ago in the 70s they used to post your grades next to your Social Security number! With all the fraud going on today I don't think they do that anymore.

Oh no! Now they don't even use my SSN on the paychecks or health insurance bills I get from the school. They don't even list my complete student ID!
