Selling a home when you have a HELOC?

I was wondering if any of you know if you can sell your home if you have a HELOC (Home Equity Line OF Credit)

A little background, our primary mortgage is paid off, but we still have the HELOC, which we just changed over from and open line of credit to a fixed % rate so we can't borrow (use) it anymore. It really is just like a mortgage payment now.

When we first got it years ago, they told us we couldn't sell our home until that was paid off.

Does anyone know how this works?

I would love to get a smaller, one level home now as I just can't seem to keep up with this huge house.

Typically any lenders that have a lien against the house, which would include a HELOC, would be paid off out of escrow when the house sells. Check with your lender to see if there are any prepayment penalties or anything else that you need to be aware of before you sell.
