Haven't been around in a while and made some mistakes
I haven't been on here in two months and OMG our situation has gone downhill.
I'm still looking for a better job as the company I work for won't be around much longer. On top of that, our building we live in is now infested with cockroaches (for someone who is terrified of bugs, I'm horrified and sleep with the light on everynight!). So of course, we're trying to move but we have discovered that we've spent all of our EF. Now that I'm out of school and just working, I get bored easy, which means I spend. It sucks now that I look back on it. We've charged on our credit cards and we're back to square one.
I feel awful, we were doing really good for a while. But soon I'm going to have to start payments on my last student loan and I know we can't afford that.
I just need some motivation. I think we're gonna start with credit cards, then savings, but we need to get out of this place in a hurry. I'm losing too much sleep and now i'm getting sick.
Any advice?
ThanksDebts

Can you return any of the items you've bought?
Will the landlord/apt manager do anything about the bugs?

I agree about possibly returning some items you purchased and the landlord should be responsible for the extermination of those yucky roaches. Maybe you should talk to him, I am sure he wouldnt want to lose a tenant over it, it would cost him more in the long run.

Rachel, try putting boric acid down to kill the roaches. I'm with you, I can't stand the little critters. Good luck and hang in there.

Thanks for all your replies. Dh doesn't want to return anything we bought and there are a few things that i did return. We both bought bikes and a nintendo wii, and well, we use the bikes alot ( I use mine for my grocery shopping since its very far to walk but I don't have a car) and the nintendo wii, I can't part with it, I'm in love. But they were all very big ticket items which blew our savings.
As for the roaches, the landlord is bringing a guy in, but we have to wait until they clean the apartment across the hall (thats where they're coming from) before they spray, so we shove towels under the doors and we have traps (the sticky kind) we dont like to spray because we have animals (a cat and two ferrets). I'm definelty going to be cruising this board alot to get new ideas!!!Debts

Regarding the Wii once you open that box sister, it's HARD to return the item and even though you bought bikes you are getting great exercise so that was a (win win) to me at least. You might try selling on ebay for extra $$$.
Also, check out www.livingonadime.com that's a GREAT website and a great tutorial and coming from someone who has messed up alot too....it's okay.
We're not perfect and we learn from our mistakes. ((HUGS))

Roaches call for all out war. Boric acid is your weapon. It is cheap. This stuff will destroy them and they cannot build up a tolerance. However, the landlord should be the one to deal with this.Roaches strike terror in my heart, the thought makes me ill. Speak to the landlord, fight with boric acid, hang in there.

I was looking for info about using boric acid if you have ferrets in the house, I can't find anything that says it would be harmful - but I did think you'd like to read this:
Boric Acid - The Best Roach Killer

Forget about insecticides. None that I know works completely. You get infested again and again with only days of rest. They also stink, and worse of all: they poison you and your children, and your pets too. Not quickly as it kills the small insects, but eventually when you get cancer and wonder why?.
Boric Acid works, and very well.
Boric acid is a common product known since the 1700s, generally used as an antiseptic - not to be put in the mouth. It was perhaps not intended for killing roaches,...but it does it, and it works like miracle!
How does it work?
I don't know, but here is a possible explanation: the roaches actually seem to like it. They eat from it and they don't die immediately, instead they go back to their nests, where they deposit some of the chemical powder they happen to carry on their legs, and spread it all over their nest where their eggs are. When the eggs hatch, it's this killer "food" the ofsprings first find, they eat from it, and that's it: they don't even have time alive to get out of their nest. Two weeks later, no more roaches, not even a trace of them, because they seem to choose their nests to dying, or do they eat each other? A theory is that roaches constipate and die of that.
Whatever strange it may be, the strangest thing is that after 200 years or so this chemical has been around, not too many people seem to know of its miracle application. Or is it that people don't generally believe anything which is not "properly" advertised? Of course it is not advertised. Nobody could become rich selling boric acid; it is so cheap!, and besides, it cannot be patented... after 200 years?Don't Breed or Buy While Shelter Pets Die

You need to get rid of the roaches before you move if you do decide to, as they will follow you in your belongings. You may not see them but if they have laid eggs you will have them in your new place. So I would stay put and let the landlord deal with them.

OH...we're leaving alot of our stuff when we go. The mattresses, the couches, the desks, its all staying. Dh and I have opted to use lawn chairs in our new place rather than bring the couch and his parents are buying us new mattesses when we move. I might have made it seem like we have an infestation, but its not really, we've seen 3 since the last week of June. Its not that bad, I'm just so terrified. Its the apartments beside us and above us that are infested, I guess we're just getting the stray ones. The landlord is doing something about it, he just has to wait until all the garbage in the other apartments is cleaned up so they don't have a chance to re-infest should some survive when the pest guy comes.
Thanks for your tips! I'll be seeking some boric acid today!!Debts
