    Default Paying Credit Cards Off

5 years ago I had 2 credit cards through Capital One that totalled $2000 that I paid in full before I got married. I lived in an apartment building and since then I bought and moved to a new house. I filled out the change of address form and everything. HOWEVER...

Today I decided to check my credit report for the first time ever and boy was I surprised. The 2 credit cards that I paid off are still on there with balances. Except now they are much higher and have produced a negative affect on my credit score and report.

I was so maddddd. I immediately called Capital One and was transferred to recovery since they charged off my account already. I explained my situation to the woman as calm as I could and she told me to fax any info I had from bank and bills... etc.

Amazingly I have same bank account and actually save most of my paperwork from everything so I found the bank statement with the copies of my checks that I paid them off with and even found a credit card statement from one of the cards that said 0 balance.

I remember after I paid them off I cut up cards and did not close accounts but do not get monthly statements from them now....

so to end my rambling..I faxed that info to them and in 72 hours I need to call to make sure they took negative off credit report and that my balances are $0. I have no idea if they will take off my credit report or how this affects me in the long run but WOW.

Helpful hint which most probably do:
Check credit report often and report any discrepencies. I never did because my credit always went through so I never thought I had anything to worry about. I am always up to date on bills so this was an oversight on me and on them.

    End of rant!

That's awful. Why was there a balance after you got a zero statement? Was it annual fees?

I have no idea what the fees were for. I did not have an annual fee on those cards. I THINK ( i wont know until I get printed report) that it may be still on my credit report but not on credit card. I asked the credit card company and they say my balance is $11xx.00 on the one card that I found the statement for! If I still had a balance i would think they would be sending me invoices. Not sure what is really going on ?? Just hope it clears up soon.

This kind of thing makes me crazy!!! I hope you get it worked out. Good luck and let us know what happens, and tell them to close those accounts.

Oh wow, I would be so mad...and freaked out. I hope it all gets straightened out with no problems. Good thing you kept all your paperwork and statements and such, good call on your part! Amazing they never let you know about the balance.

    Darn!

Did you have payment protection or anything on the accounts? Since they charge you for that and some other little sneaky things.

    Default UPDATE:

The balances have been removed and 30-90 days after the first phone call I made the charge-offs will be taken off my credit report. I will keep calling after the 30 day mark to stay on top of this.

I am refinancing the mortgages in mid-October and hope they are off by then. It should help my credit score with the debt ratio amount being that much lower (that and me paying $5000 in cc debt by then!)

All in all now I am happy..we will see how much harping I haev to do to make sure it is completely taken care of!
