DH's birthday is coming up...
My DH's birthday is in 1 month and he's turning 30!
I want him to have a good birthday and he's told me what he wants.
He wants a GPS device. I priced some and found a nice one (lower end) that retails for about $200. Of course, we JUST started this whole saving for the EF and snowballing thing, so I don't want to spend that much on a present. I've seen it on Ebay and can probably save about $50 off retail.
What would you do? I'd love to get it cheaper, but I'm afraid if I get it on Ebay, it won't be the one he wants and I can't "return" it. I've been selling things on Ebay too and think I could get $150 or so in time to buy one. If I didn't get it on Ebay, the money would have to come from one of the budget categories and our EF if I don't want to put it on a CC.
What would you do??

I'd just buy it from a seller that has a return policy, or ask more specific questions about what features he wants.
Also, you could always look around for an internet coupon that might help cut the cost a bit.

If it were me, I'd do a LOT of research on them before I put any money down. cnet.com and a lot of other websites offer good reviews on things such as that. Then, once I found the one I thought was the right one, like a PP said, get it from someone with a solid return policy. As great as Ebay is, you dont want to end up "stuck" with it if something happens or he doesnt like that particular one. If such a thing happened, you would in fact have NOT saved money, and it would end up costing you more in the end anyway. Also, make sure you get quality, even if it costs a little more. Buying one really good one is cheaper than buying 4 not so great ones, kwim?

Sunray,
I would look around at your local paper circulars and check all prices, also I would spend the extra and get a good quality.......In some cases I believe that you get what you pay for......you also want a warrantee and a return garantee in case of problems and in this case spending this much money I think you would be better off to purchase it in a name brand retail shop.

Well, to be honest, I would forego expensive presents until my debt was under control. Though if you asked me that question ten years ago (when I was rolling in debt) I'd have said do some research and buy at a store with a good return/exchange policy. My DH's birthday is in 1 month and he's turning 30! I want him to have a good birthday and he's told me what he wants....He wants a GPS device. I priced some and found a nice one (lower end) that retails for about $200....What would you do?
Good luck with your decision.
