I was paying 27 bucks a month with a contract for my cell phone. I switched my old number to a new tracfone for 79.00. Tracfone has no contracts. You pay as you go. You just buy minutes and add it to your phone. The phone I bought had a special offer, so with during the life of this phone, I get double minutes of any minutes I buy. So, I started out buying 400 minutes for 99.00 which actually means I'll get 800 min, plus the 20 min that the phone comes with as a start-up. All in all, for 178 dollars, I will get 12 months of talk time. Next year, I'll probably get by on a year for only 99.00 (since I won't have the cost of the phone.) That's 15 dollars a month as opposed to 27 dollars a month for the first year. Next year, I'll be down to about 8 dollars a month (because I'll stop factoring in the cost of the phone.) You can switch your present cell phone number to your new tracfone, too. It's really great. Anyone else have one?

We use Tracfone, too. I bought DH one for Christmas, paying $24.99 for it, and getting 70 minutes of talk time free. After you purchase talk time once, then each time after that, we get 30 minutes free when we purchase 60 minutes (for $19.99). We purchase time about every 60-90 days, so his phone costs us less than $10 a month. I got myself one last spring. We don't use our phones much, and we can send a text message for only 0.3 of a "time unit". A unit is one minute. It has been very inexpensive for us, I love no monthly bills. We have never had a problem with the phones or the service.

I have been wondering about these phones. Our contract is not up until next summer but I can't wait to switch. I am sick of the monthly bill. I was thinking about one of these for my daughter. She wants a cell phone really bad for Christmas. I thought I could buy the phone and a few minute cards and grandparents and aunts could buy minutes for her too. I have seen these phones really cheap. She could buy her own minutes after that with allowance or whatever. I wonder if there is a big difference between the tracphone and the Go Phone from cingular? Does anybody know?
Thanks, Amy
I don't know much about any other service other than tracfone. I chose tracfone because they ONLY do pre-paid, so there would never be any temptation to switch back.

I'm using prepaid Virgin Mobile. Bought the Oyster phone on sale for around $13. I pay about $20 every 3 months - Target has the top up cards on sale every so often. So far, so good.

Wow! I can't WAIT for my contract to run out! I believe most of them want a 3 year contract now , the phones are junk, and if you need a new phone they want to renew the contract for 3 more years! When people start leaving in great numbers, maybe they will realize how their 'policies' drove people away.
Is Tracphone sold online? Do you have a link? Thanks!

I did not realize that you could take your own phone number from your previous carrier to tracfone, I knew you could with other paid contracts but not tracfone. That ought to help get lots of customers for them.

We've had tracfones for many years and have had some problems with reception living out in the middle of nowhere. They are cost effective since we don't use them often, but seem to be less reliable in other areas of our state for reception. I would look at their territory map to make sure that there is coverage in your area before purchasing. tracfone.com
I bought a $14 tracfone and a card with some minutes, costing $40 altogether. They never actually gave me a card but did give me a receipt and said the minutes were on the receipt? I didn't know how to get it started so the store manager set it all up for me, even charged it up with the free 10 minutes it came with and told me I had to later add the card minutes I bought. I couldn't figure out how to do that so the thing sits there and I've not used it once since April. The time ran out and now I have no idea how to get the extra minutes I bought on there. The directions it came with were of no help, either, but looking over the minutes plan, it looks very expensive to be used in place of a regular land line.
Our contract is up with our old cell phone provider, yes!!! Finally getting rid of those monsters after two long years.
After reading this I decided to purchase two tracfones. One for my daughter, she'll be responsible for her own minutes from here on, and one to share with the dh. Coverage is good in our area. I'm very happy to no longer have that monthly obligation.
Thanks for reminding me to dig out my tracfone and work on reactivating it and adding the minutes I bought. The 60 minutes should be more than enough for the next 90 days and in case of any emergencies if I am away from home or dd is away I can give it to her to hold onto.
I've had a tracfone for 5 years now, and I love it, It's not for someone who's going to talk for hours, but works great if you just want it for emergencies or to call home and say your going to be late. But I would suggest getting the one year plan, that's service for one year and 400 minutes. I never use them all, and just carry them over to the next year. Well worth the $108.00, that's including taxes. My daughter pays more than that a month, of course then again she has the phone growing out of her ear! LOL!
