    Default credit history

    Six years ago the man I was with died,(we were common law) he had a big farm and was over his head in debt. Almost 400,000 dollars. He died in May and even though I tried to get a lower payment so I could save my credit til the place was sold they wouldn't even talk tome. This was in May. In June they started foreclosure. By September everything was sold at auction and paid for. But they will not remove the foreclosure off my credit. I have tried explaining several times but nobody will even give me a chance to explain.Does anyone know if there is there something I can do about this? They are the only ones that I am having a problem with. The rest of the companies were fine with the payment and didn't report it on my credit. What got me was that I wasn't recongnized as his wife since it was common law so I got nothing but the bills.TIA

    You need an attorney. Common law is tricky business. Actually, you aren't responsible for someone else's debts, unless your name is on them. All you had to do was tell them that. I had the same problem when my husband died. I had an attorney, and he simply said to write them and tell them that I am not responsible for anyone's debts except my own. I actually got the hospital to refund me $5,000 I paid them, because it was in his name only.

    Default yes lawyer up;

    If it is reported in your credit report. Until you can find out what your legal situation is. i would write a letter to the three credit bureaus and ask that the letter be placed in your file. Explaining your situation and how it went down. That way when you apply for credit, a apartment, new house. the people looking at your report at least know there is a reasonable definition of what happened...
