Fridge update
It turns out I don't need a new fridge after all.
I just needed to defrost the freezer compartment. I'm at a loss as to how that happened (the fridge is only 5 years old), so I'm keeping an eagle eye on it for now. If I start to see ice building up again, I'll tackle it & call for a repairman.

I thought most freezers nowadays didn't need to be defrosted...? I remember my Mom doing this years ago, when the freezer would be caked up with frost. It would drain into dish tubs, and we'd have newspaper around it on the kitchen floor. It was a mess! Is that what you had to do?

Glad it was a "free" repair & hope it "plays nice" from here on out.

wow yeah i remember my mom had a "defroster" it was like a mini space heater you put in and it drained all over the world and made a mess.
I wonder what would cause it to happen nowadaysReba

We had the same problem with our refrigerator and it was about the same age. Is your refrigerator a GE or Frigidaire by any chance? We replaced 2 parts on ours and it fixed the problem, we replaced the defrost timer, defrost thermostast and heater and we have not had any more trouble out of it. It was not hard to replace them, DH did it with directions from the appliance parts store and the internet. I hope that if it freezes up on you again that you can fix it with the same parts we did, it was not really all that expensive, lots cheaper than a new one

It's a Sears Kenmore, with the bottom freezer, and yes, it did get a bit messy. I used several bath towels, but was able to pry most of the thickest ice with my fingers (NOT a sharp metal or even plastic object). I think this happened because the vents in the back of the freezer got blocked at some point. Still, I will keep an eye on it.
