    Default Questin about 401k

This might be a really stupid question, but how often does a matching employer put their contribution into your 401k? Quarterly, Yearly? Is it different for every company? Thanks!

Smile Twice a month, for me

    Hi,
I had a 403b, which is similar except it was for employees of a non-profit, and my employer put in matching funds twice a month. But that was because I was paid twice a month. I really don't know if it varies from employer to employer, but I suspect it does. On a related note: I just retired, and so with whatever wisdom of age I might possess let me encourage you to put every spare penny the law allows into your 401k. And if you are old enough, put in the catch up amount. I maxed out my account to get advantage of the free money match, and it allowed me to retire at age 58. It's really a good deal!

My company matches my contributions to my 401k every paycheck.

Every employer is different. MY company matches on an annual basis. I too say, save as much as you can. I work in this industry and between the tax savings and the future growth of your account, any amount over time will add up!

Hubbys company also pays the match every paycheck, which is bi-weekly.

I'll also second putting in all you can, it really can make a HUGE difference in your future. We've only had the 401k option for two years, the first year there wasn't even a match but we contributed, hey it's pre tax dollars. In the last year it's grown quickly and really gives me a feeling of security having it there. We've got at least 20 more years to pay into it (OH LORDY PLEASE DON'T LET HIM DECIDE TO RETIRE YOUNGER THAN THAT, LOLOL!)

perhaps the first year they dont contribute either and I didnt read that fine print. I read it all fairly well, I dont recall seeing it. I emailed the company, just waiting to hear back. Its actually not my 401k, its dbf's. Right now I have him up to 7%, after we pay off all debt Ill bump it up to 15%. I cant contribute to a 401k at my company until Im 21, which is frustrating. Ive been contributing to a roth ira since i was 16 though.

Our 401k was just started by the company two years ago and only because a few of the employees really made noise wanting it. It took another year of them hounding to get the company to contribute. Sometimes the squeaky wheel DOES get the grease.

Every company is different in how they handle it.
