    Default gas company debt

I currently have my gas bill in my moms name. I owe a balance from living in a previous place plus the gas company wants a $150 deposit to have it in my name once the old bill is paid off. This is why it's in my moms name now.

I need to get it in my name as soon as I can because I do not want it in my moms name. I believe my old balance is like 160, I can't afford to pay it at one time right now. Should I call them to see if I can make payments until it's paid off then pay the deposit fee so it can be in my name?

Yep, that sounds like a good plan.....make sure to talk to someone at the company and get it set up, that way you can deal with them directly and not a collection company.

Sounds like a good plan to me, just make sure you don't tell them that your gas is currently in your mother's name.

Another thing to consider is SAVING the money as fast as possible and then just paying it and then getting it in your name.

I would make payment arrangements, too, then you won't be as tempted (like i would) to spend it on something else. And they likely won't charge interest.

I say give them a call about payment arrangements, remember they want their money so they "should" work with you on this.

I think I should save it up and pay in case they look at my address and wonder why it's in someone elses name, not sure if it matters but I do need heat

Just a little note, if you have children in the house by law they cannot shut off their services. Might be something you want to look into. I know that's a law in PA.

I think I'd try to make payment arrangements...even if it's $25/month at least it'd be working towards payoff and going into your name.

Actually, our state law is they can't shut off your gas in the winter (if you have children under 18). After March 1st they will shut it off if it is in arrears and not paid.

In NY the gas company will shut it off and if you have children they will call Social Services.
