Prepaid Visa Card at Walmart
Does anyone have one of these? I read that there is a $4.95 a month service fee are there any other fees attached? I have a debt card but am thinking of getting rid of it. It is too easy to whip out and use.

I was thinking about getting one of those as well and put our gas allowance on it each month instead of paying cash using the envelope system. What is stopping me right now from using it is that you have to pay the $4.95 fee everytime you reload it. I don't want to have to give them $4.95 of our money, I'm too cheap (frugal!) for that. I guess I should explain this would be from our local bank since Walmart said their's are not reloadable, but of course they might be wrong. They didn't sound like they knew were too confident in their answer.

If you are talking about the green dot card, I would not recommend it. They charge you a fee up front, a fee during the month, and a fee to recharge. I think all the fees are $4.95. I would suggest either leaving your debit at home and use cash, or getting a card from http://www.simon.com/giftcard . They charge $2.00 and you can't reload but there are no additional fees.

These cards are through netspend.
We've been members since 2005 and have use it for direct deposit, taxes and anything else you can think of. We've never had a problem with them.
If you don't have credit cards and want them, this will work in it's place. Anywhere credit cards are excepted so are these.
We pay the fee by the year, saving some and have no fees except for reloads and atm. If you are looking for a disposable card, I wouldn't use these as they require your social security to activate them, you can only have 3 accounts per person, and it's best if you have a cell phone or regular computer connection. Use walgreen's green dot cards instead or whatever you have local that works the same way.
They are prepaid cards meaning, you have to have money on the card to use it.
Please make sure you read all their fees.
If you have any questions just ask as they don't have customer service for none card members.

Methinks the prepaid card would be just as easy to whip out and use! I have a gift card from Walmart so that I buy their gas for 3c off a gallon. There's no fee at all associated with that. Of course, I don't know whether or not you are wanting something just to use at Walmart, or also use elsewhere.
But I have lived my life steering clear of any card with a fee!Spiritual:

I find it easier to limit myself with my prepaid card. I pay $69 a year to basically have a credit card that's limit is set by me.
The fee I pay is lower than any credit card or banking account fees I will ever own, Plus I have a savings account with them that is currently drawing 5% interest.
I've used ours for things like renting a car, reserving a hotel room when we went to Disney.

Here's what I found on their FAQ
It looks like its $2.00 to purchase, 5.95 if you lose it and need a replacement.
MetaBank Fees
There are no fees when using the Giftaccount to purchase goods and services from merchants located in the United States. The following MetaBank fees may apply and will be deducted from the balance of the Giftaccount, except where prohibited or modified by applicable law:
* Handling Fee: There is a $2.00 handling fee per Giftaccount paid by the purchaser at the time the Giftaccount is opened.
* Replacement fee: There is a $5.95 fee if a Giftaccount is closed and replaced for any reason (such as when a Giftaccount holder reports fraudulent or unauthorized use of the Giftaccount). At our option, a Giftaccount may be replaced with either a new Giftaccount or a Simon GiftcardŽ.
* Conversion fee: There is a $5.95 fee if you ask us to convert your Simon Giftaccount to a Simon Visa Giftcard. See the section of this Agreement captioned "Conversion to Physical Simon Visa Giftcard."
* Expired Giftaccount Fee: There is a $15.00 fee to open a new Giftaccount to replace an expired Giftaccount. See the section of this Agreement captioned "Expiration."
* Monthly Administrative Fee*: After the first 12 calendar months following the opening date of the Giftaccount, a $2.50 fee will be deducted from the Giftaccount each month until the Giftaccount expires. This fee will not be charged once the balance on the Giftaccount reaches $0.00.
*New York customers only: For Giftaccounts purchased at retail in New York or by New York residents via the Internet, no monthly service fee shall be imposed at any time prior to the thirteenth consecutive month of non-use.
* Foreign Transaction Fee: A foreign transaction fee may be imposed if you purchase goods or services from a merchant that is located outside the United States. See the section of this Agreement captioned "Foreign Transaction Conversion and Fee."

The WalMart gift cards are supposed to be good for gas. Ask your bank if they have a cash rewards program you can use with your atm/debit card if you have one.
