I buy generic cartridges from eBay. With some you have to move the chip from an authentic cartridge over to the generic, and the printer can't always read the ink levels, but they work so it doesn't matter to me. Recently I bought 5 generic black cartridges for my printer (normally $12 or so a piece for name brand) for $12 total, shipping included.
Oh good question since I was curious myself. $30 for our color and $20 for our B&W is a huge haul for us and I don't look forward to it. We have color ink because of my HS'ing of the girls.

I buy mine at Staples. I take in the empty one and they give me back 3.00 instantly off the purchase of the new one....I just bought one Friday and it was 15.00 reg. price...I paid 12.00 (plus tax).
Have you ever tried refills for your cartridges? Most Walgreens will refill them for $10.00/Black and $20.00/color. Here is a link to see if there is one near you.
~I have a 7 year old Epson that works great. I buy generic ink cartridges on Ebay. I just got 2 color, 2 BW for $10, shipping included. I've never had a problem with generics/Ebay. I even print stickers, photos and t-shirt transfers with them.~

One of our printers is a Dell. As long as you do not let it run completely out of ink, it can be refilled. We bought black ink at the dollar store and DH just suirts it into the cartridge before it goes completely dry. If it goes dry, it won't take the refill. So for $1 we get the cartridge refilled about 5 times.
Thanks for the info, Neeley. We have a Dell as well, and I've never refilled the cartridges or bought generics because I'm afraid I'll ruin it. I'll be heading to the dollar store now when I need another one!

thanks for this info...I too have an Epson C42, I'm going to be checking out Ebay tonight.
The cartridges aren't cheap, but we buy them from B & H photo in NY, they're online. DH says they're the cheapest he can find them, and he won't use generics or refills, so we're stuck with manufacturer's stuff.
