Food dehydrator
Thinking of making a food dehydrator using plywood and a lightbulb. Anyone make one before and have any tips? I am doing it mostly for fun but also to make hiking/backcountry meals as well as lunch snacks for myself and kiddos (like banana chips).

That's great. I had found the third link, but not the other two. I was actually pondering rigging a thermostat like in the first link. Will post how it went when I get it put together.

The third link looks super easy and inexpensive to make!!
For those of you wondering why make one when you can buy one for $30...a $30 unit probably won't be as spacious as one of these hm suckers!!!! Once you really start dehydrating you quickly realize that your dehydrator always seems too small LOL!

Thanks for posting this! I love DIY projects, and have been looking at dehydrators, however I cannot afford one at this time. Maybe I will give this a shot!

I've been lusting after an Excaliber as well. I have a Magic Chef variety but the plastic trays just don't hold up and they don't hold much. hmmm, this has me thinking even more (don't tell Greebo) about building my own. I like the idea of making my own tower and shelves and I can put a small fan (think computer fan) inside for better convection.

Okay, I've put one together, and here is a picture. I don't yet know how successful this will be, but I've got bananas in there now. Here's hoping for banana chips and not a burned down house!
